Bluescreens, a variety of them.

Hello,

Since most of the stuff I've googled that led to here hasn't solved the problem yet, I've decided to sign up and see if I can take it to the next level.

It's been a month and a half of daily BSOD's, which occur seemingly at random, over the course of the day. I don't think I've had any occur while I'm on my desktop. I have had them while browsing, watching videos, playing games.

My PC:
Acer Aspire desktop
E4600 Core 2 Duo processor
3GB of DDR2
500GB of SATA hard disk
nVidia GeForce 8600GS graphics card
Vista Home Premium.

The BSOD errors I have recieved (I haven't had time to write these down so I don't have the parameters):

0x0000008e
0x0000007e
0x00000024
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
0x000000D
0x000000A

Files that have been listed:
WIN32k.sys
nvlddmkm.sys
dxgkrnl.sys

I've also had a couple of errors missing a listed file or an error code, and some which just go straight to reboot without showing a bluescreen error.

I tried updating my graphics drivers already, opening up the cover for better air circulation, as well as running antivirus programs, and a registry cleaner.

Any help, even just identifying a common cause of all the errors would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Pring.

PS, will try to provide any additional information if required.

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

hi and welcome to TSF this is what i found on your error
0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues (which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).
“STOP 0x0000008e” Error Message During Windows XP Setup {KB 315335} Win XP
Games: “Stop” Error Message That References Nv4_disp.dll {KB 325730} Flight Simulator, other games (wth Nvidia-based video adapter)
Your Computer Stops Responding When You Use the Highlighter Feature & the Font Color Feature {KB 829578} Win XP
0x1000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
Essentially the same error as 0x8E above.
since this could be a driver or hardware issue i suggest you check in device manager for any yellow !,or red Xs you can also look for hidden devices by clicking on view at the top of the page in device manager and then show hidden devices.you may also need the help of someone here who can run a debugger to find the culprit.also have you installed any new hardware or drivers recently

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

A very strange combination of errors, especially the STOP 0x24 and the STOP 0x0D.

After following joeten's advice, please follow the suggestions in this post to upload a bunch of information so we can debug the problem: http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

After upload of info, please run the Driver Verifier - http://www.techsupportforum.com/2110308-post4.html

Check Device Manager - what is the date and version # of your graphics drivers?

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

Alright, so I've made a few changes since my first post.

One of which is that I downloaded SP 2, on its own it didn't do much, and second I deactivated UAC, which was one of the recommended fixes for 0x0A.

It fixed the bluescreens, but now I'm getting frequent CTD's.

I'm doing everything detailed in your posts, and will upload everything shortly. Besides everything I've done to fix it, I hadn't installed any new hardware or drivers before this started, besides Windows Updates which installed automatically. No yellow !'s or red X's in the device manager. My "display adapter" driver, NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS, has the driver date of "10/06/2009" and the version is "8.15.11.8618".

Hmm. Doesn't seem to like 7zip.

Or the regular Windows compressor for that matter.

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

CTD is Crash To Desktop? If so, what crashes to the Desktop?

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

Ah! How could I be so stupid!

No, not CTD's, the standard "This program has stopped working Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" kind of thing. So far, Spore, Battlefield Heroes, and Empire Total War (all games) have done this in the middle of gameplay. So I suppose it's a graphics driver problem.

Better than a BSOD, but still concerning me.

And the .zip file still doesn't want to upload.

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

multiple different bsod usually indicates under powered

what are you running
video card
cpu
m/board
ram
power supply
brand
wattage

check the listings in the bios for voltages and temperatures and post them

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

Hardware issues (like those dai has described) won't show up in any of our testing - so it's best to investigate those first.

Also, before you close the crashed program, try going to Task Manager...Processes tab.
Then right click on the crashed process and select "Create Dump File"
Create a free account at http://www.box.net, upload the file there, share it, and then post the link here.

If you can capture the process while it's crashed (and before the offending party exits) we have a chance of locating the cause.

Just a thought, but you may want to try re-enabling UAC and seeing if the system will crash to a BSOD. This will tell help to eliminate/confirm that UAC was the cause (because it may have been SP2 that fixed it).

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

Well, new day and new problems.

I got 0x0000008E playing Battlefield Heroes today, and Windows failed to start afterwords with MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION 0x09C. I used Startup Repair and it ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool, which took awhile but when I came back there were no "results" displayed like it promised. Does it store it in a file somewhere?

Since possible causes for both errors seem to be RAM, I'm going to buy two cards to replace the old ones. If that doesn't work, then I'll try the PSU next.

I'll be sure to get a dump file of the processes that crash next time it happens, but can I use mediafire instead? I already have an account there, and I'm pretty sure it does the same thing as box.net.

Also, I've gotten the PC Health listings from the BIOS.

CPU Vcore: 1.280V
Chipset Voltage: 1.344V
+3.30V: 3.344V
+5.00V: 5.090V
+12.0: 11.840V
5VSB: 5.026V
Voltage Battery: 3.040
Current CPU Temp: 31C/87F
Current System Temp: 44C/111F
CPU Fan Speed: 937 RPM
System Fan Speed: N/A

I'd like to say thanks again to everyone who's helping me.

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

Vista doesn't usually get STOP 0x9c errors - usually they're STOP 0x124
Are you using XP, or dual-booting with an older XP installation?

Run Startup Repair from the installation disk.
Run bootable memory diagnostics: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html
Run bootable hard drive diagnostics: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html

Re: Bluescreens, a variety of them.

No, I use Vista 100%. Don't even know how to dual-boot a PC, lol. Memory diagnostics found hardware problems. So since RAM's the cheapest and easiest to replace I'll get to that first. If that doesn't solve my problem then I'm doing a factory reset, and then finally, if that doesn't work, I'm bringing it to a computer technician.

Thanks for the help, guys.
