Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
OPERATING SYSTEM (OS):
Windows Vista Ultimate - SP 2. - Error is garbled on all occasions (please see embeded images at the bottom) No way to get actual screen shot, picture taken by a 3.2 MP camera phone. Sorry for the terrible quality. - Crashes occur at unpredictable rates. Occur when I'm browsing the internet, to working on a file to playing a game. No rhyme or reason is apparent. - Reccently three games- Fiesta, Demigod and Kings Bounty The Legend. Errors and crashes predate these games and has been occuring for some time (5 months). Prior to those three games, the last program installed was about 9 months ago. I am not including the programs I was told to install to combat a virus problem when I was last here. - Did you do any of the following: - Run a scan with an updated anti-virus program? Yes, came up clean - Run a scan with an updated anti-Trojan program? Yes, came up clean - Run a scan with an updated root kit detection program? No, do not have one, know one I can trust. - Run anti-spyware scans with at least two freshly updated anti-spyware programs? I have only used Trend Micro's Anti-Virus and Spyware Scanner. All it lists are my cookies (which are promptly deleted). - Provide us with information about the steps you have taken to solve the problem yourself, this is important! I have checked all recent updates for my anti-virus and Vista to make sure there are no conflicts with programs that I use, no known conflicts. Did data intergity checks to make certain that all of my files on the HD were not corrupted, they were clean. I ran a scan of the actual HD to make sure it wasn't damage, came back clean. I defragmented and rescanned the data, came up clean. I sent the laptop back to Dell to have them check it, came back as working properly. I sent it back again to Dell after the occurance, came back again as working properly. From what I can see in the close up I belive it says. ...... Hardware Malfunction.... Call your hardware vendor for support ...... Parity Check / Memory P.... Failure ...... the system has halted the ..... are parts I can not make out. Thank you for your help and patience with me. ![]()

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
Can you get into Windows? If so, run the instructions in this post so we can get some more info: http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html
This appears to be a video issue, but I'm also concerned about the reference to memory errors. Some random suggestions for the time that you're waiting for a reply: - try another monitor plugged into the plug on the side/back of the system - find the exact model number of your Dell (I'm wondering about the nVidia solder issues) - blow out the case with canned air (don't use a compressor or a vacuum, it'll cause damage) - try a bootable hard drive diagnostic (instructions here: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html ) - try a bootable memory diagnostic (instructions here: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html )

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
Windows runs perfect other than this issue.
- try another monitor plugged into the plug on the side/back of the system This is a laptop, no external monitor. I tried using my TV as an atlernate, no issue apparent. However like I stated the issue will arise at random. - find the exact model number of your Dell (I'm wondering about the nVidia solder issues) Inspiron 1520 - blow out the case with canned air (don't use a compressor or a vacuum, it'll cause damage) I did as best as I could considering I am using a laptop. - try a bootable hard drive diagnostic (instructions here: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html ) - try a bootable memory diagnostic (instructions here: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html ) I will look into those right now. Attached are the files you wanted. |

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
Just blow out the fan holes in both directions, that's all that you can easily do with a laptop.
There's no memory dump files in the attachment. Could you check to see if there's any memory dump files at C:\Windows\Minidump? If not, then check C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP If not there, then search (using advanced search) the entire computer for files ending in .dmp

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
Your system has an nVidia 8600M video card, which is one of the one's that has the problems that I was thinking about. There's no evidence of a recall at the Dell website, but you may want to contact their customer support people about this.
Here's an article discussing it: http://www.worldlawdirect.com/forum/...ng-recall.html

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
found the memory dump file. I asked Dell about that when it went in for the 2nd check up, they said it wasn't included. However I don't believe them on that matter.
As for the dump file. I have no memory dump file. I do have a file name mini061609-01.dmp but all access to it is blocked (even when I try to set admin controls to the file) |

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
Copy the file to your Desktop and then try it

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
The dump file points to your nVidia video drivers as the cause for this.
-Download the latest version of your video drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us -Uninstall your current video drivers through Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program -Reboot the system and dismiss any "Found New Hardware" dialogs that may show up. -Double click on the downloaded file to install the drivers. Modem, networking, and wireless drivers are probably outdated and need updating. Please post back and let us know how it goes. Here's the memory dump analysis: Code:

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
Network drivers were updated recently. Also I can't download any updates from NVIDIA, they have some sort of draconian system with Dell. Only drivers that Dell approves are allowed to be installed. Last time I checked it was almost a year out of date, all that Dell has done recently is roll out a BIOS update for my make and model.
EDIT - The updates that are offered through the Dell site cause the error mentioned earlier at a much higher frequency. Last edited by Ferdoc; 06-20-2009 at 12:13 AM. |

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
Updates may not remove the corruption - so I usually recommend uninstalling the drivers, rebooting, then installing freshly downloaded one's.
As for the nVidia 8600M - try this link: http://laptopvideo2go.com/drivers To use it you'll need the characters for DEV_ and SUBSYS_ To get them, go to Device Manager...Details tab...Hardware ID I would suggest the Certified drivers as they've been certified (by Microsoft) to work without issue in Windows systems.

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
Already used laptopvideo2go plus a driver mod that was vetted by a techie friend. The current driver I'm runing is for Windows XP and has reduced the number of errors I recieved significantly.

Re: Blue Screen of (partial) Death - New Version?
It sounds like the video error thingie that I mentioned earlier.
Try keeping it as cool as you can and hope that Dell/nVidia will relent on the repairs.
