Cannot Install Vista SP2 error 0x800f082f

I tried to install SP2 on Vista Home Premium, but I get error message 0x800f082f

Installation proceeds OK till the very end (3 of 3, 100%), then an error message that the installation didn't take place and a reverting to the previous setup is initiated. However, the latter is unsuccessful!!

MSinfo shows SP2 installed; Updater shows SP2 install pending; and, I'm left with a system that boots every time with a 3 of 3, 0% install message and shuts down with another install related message.

I tried System Restore. The result is an error message (0x80070057).
I tried to uninstall the update. Error message "An error has occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled.

I tried to access Windows Update, but I get error code 80070002
Then I downloaded the stand-alone version. But it installed starting with 3 of 3, 0% just like all all my boots now! And gave me an error message (0x800f082f)

System Specs,

Intel Core 2 Duo 7400, 2.8 Ghz
4 gig ram
Geforce 8600 GT
500 GB Harddrive

Hello

You seem to go around posting the same all over the internet...

Anyway..

Try cmd>sfc /scannow (Maybe it will fix the problem)
Try installing only 1 update at a time
Regrettably, I must inform you that all the people with the same error solved it by performing a CLEAN installation (except one person who did the installing only 1 update at a time option)

HOWEVER, Microsoft in case of failed attempts at installing a software, suggests the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

You can find it here

When I try the sfc /scannow command I get

"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again"

I rebooted my machine several times, and it says the same thing

Is the windows installer cleanup utility for programs only? I don't think I can remove updates.

What do you have to lose by trying?

I installed the cleanup utility and I see is for removing programs only, not updates or service packs

Its not like I didn't try them, I just didn't gain anything

So, you're down to 2 options:
Install 1 update at a time.
Perform a clean installation.

Colleague had similar problem and turned out his Vista was not legit...

Re: Cannot Install Vista SP2 error 0x800f082f

Sigh,

Don't you hate it when you search through forums trying to find an answer and can't find any,

I posting two workarounds in case anybody is reading this has the same problem,

Here is an alternative way to download windows updates,
http://www.technize.com/2009/05/31/5...omment-page-1/

I like this one
http://windizupdate.com/

Here is a program that will look for updates for your programs
http://cleansofts.org/view/update-notifier.html

Here is another, which looks for security holes
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

And, finally, for an alternative to windows update, you might have to go with a third party program to backup system files, such as this, http://www.farstone.com/software/restoreit.htm

Just search for system restore alternative in google to get other programs.

Oh well, I learned my lesson, never install Microsoft service packs from a dirty computer with tons of programs. Always install big service packs after a fresh reformat.

Re: Cannot Install Vista SP2 error 0x800f082f

Hey legoman762005, I feel for you. You didn't say if you had a Vista disk or not. Isn't it just like MS to let the people figure out what their engineer's should have. I installed SP2 or should I saY spSCREW because my system has run lousy since I installed it at 4:30A.M. this morning. Oh it installed ok, said it "could take an hour" and "will reboot a few times". It rebooted 2 times and took a total of 20 minutes to install, Fine I thought. I didn't have a problem with SP1 but was afraid because I saw so many with problems afterward. If you didn't have all your windows updates I don't think it would have installed SP2 at all. Did you check error code 80070002 at MS? Located here: http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?mode=r&query=80070002&spid=global&catalog=LCID%3D1033&1033comm=1&res=20Sounds like a license issue, not that your's is illegit but my guess is it has something to do with MS's Genuine jazz. You said "I tried to access Windows Update, but I get error code 80070002". Does the machine run now? How could you try to access ms update if you cannot boot?

"I'm left with a system that boots every time with a 3 of 3, 0% install message and shuts down with another install related message."

at this point if you have a disc, sorry I just don't follow your post.
After my 4:30 am install, my browser crashes every 20mins, MicrosoftWord starts to open a page and then stops responding, etc etc. My performance Reliability Index has been a 10.0 since January...in 18 hours after sp2 I'm at a 9. I had run Ccleaner prior to install, uninstalled my antivirus, did a checkdisk and dergagged and started from a cold boot before I installed. Somethings strange happened to me but I am functional. In your case unless you have some backup dvd's of files, photos etc you'll be trully starting with a new machine. If you do wipe the drive and install I'd stop at SP1.

Hi Zappaboss, Sorry to hear about your frustrations.

Bill Gates needs to come back to Microsoft and fix it up.

Yeah, I do have a DVD, but the machine runs fine. The only problem I have is that I can't use windows update.

Its not worth a clean wipe
