Partitioning using command Prompt

Hi there,

My laptops hardrive died and it was replaced by the dell company as per the warranty agrrement, the tech guy who installed the new hardrive only made one partition i.e a C drive and did not make any other partitions is it possible to create new partitions using Command Prompt, if not then what partitioning software would you recomend to create another partition.
Secondly, if i do a partition would my data be at risk.

thnx in advance :D

Re: Partitioning using command Prompt

Use the Vista disk management software by typing computer management in the search area of the start menu. It will appear above. Click on it. Then select disk management. You may have to shrink the C partition to ge unallocated space for the new partition. No data is at risk as long as you don't format the C partition.

Re: Partitioning using command Prompt

If you insist on using the command-line, you can try diskpart for partitioning.
Diskpart is not as easy to use as, say, fdisk. You have to select drives and volumes before doing any operations on them. Type help and help commandname for options.
I'm not sure if diskpart allows resizing partitions though (assuming your only partition uses all the space on the drive and you have no space left). If not, then you'll have to use disk management as mentioned above (quicker way to access is start, run, diskmgmt.msc)

Re: Partitioning using command Prompt

Easy to do without using the command prompt as already mentioned.
