Hello. My dad recently upgraded his laptop from XP to Vista. His vista box can connect to his office's modem router; but at home it's a completely different story.
When I plug in the ethernet cable, it shows that it's connected but websites will not open in internet explorer or firefox. When i try to diagnose the problem, the error message "Cannot communicate with primary DNS Server (172.40.7.220)" pops out with the option to reset the network adapter "Local Area Connection". But when I click the option to reset, the same error message pops out again. My Internet Protocal is already set to "Obtain DNS Server address autmotically" and I have no idea what else to do. Can anyone please help me? ): |

Re: Cannot communicate with primary DNS server?
hi
Did you try: RUN>cmd (as administrator) >ipconfig /flushdns You can also try:Start>Run>cmd (as administrator) and reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Also reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults: netsh int ip reset reset.log You have to reboot your system for the changes to apply. |

It still doesn't work D:
The same error messages pop out. And the connection still shows "Local Only" ><. I'm using a D-Link router. Any other suggestions? :[. |

Re: Cannot communicate with primary DNS server?
Is his computer part of a domain? You may have to make it part of a workgroup for it to work. Also, did this work in both locations before it was upgraded?
