Vista processes not working
I have a HP Compaq Presario with Vista 32bit OS. This problem has been going on for a few days now. When I boot up my notebook, the sidebar doesn't appear, the network icon in the taskbar has a red X on it (but I'm still connected to a network), and the task manager won't appear after pressing ctrl-shift-esc or right clicking on the taskbar. When I try to bring up the task manager, all I get is a green grid icon in the taskbar which cannot be accessed. If I try to initiate task manager multiple times, I get multiple green grids in the taskbar. The missing sidebar is kind of grayed out with inaccessible menu buttons at the top, and when the cursor is placed in that area I get the "thinking" cursor. I also cannot download windows updates nor adobe acrobat updates, as it just shows the download bar at 0%. I tried to pull up the Back and System Restore folder, and it never comes up...all it shows is the blank window for it. Am I hijacked?
I ran Avira virus scan, to no good. If anyone can help, I would glad to give you more info and I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks. |

Re: Vista processes not working
Hi -
Does the same occur in safemode? Yes, you could be infected. A few things 1st. . . Tap F8 during boot-up and select safemode w/ networking. Try and download a file. Windows Updates cannot be d/l in safemode. See if system restore works in safemode - START | rstrui Is Vista retail or OEM (HP)? Validate your installation at Microsoft Genuine Advantage www.microsoft.com/genuine If no problems with validation, proceed to to our Security Center, Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help Forum, to have your system reviewed by a Security Analyst. Please be sure to follow THESE STEPS carefully before posting your logs in the Security Forum. Please be patient as the Security Analysts are very busy and one will get to you as soon as possible. Re: Vista processes not working
thanks for getting back to me jcgriff2.
I tried booting in safe mode like you suggested, and all I got was a black screen with the words "safe mode" in all four corners and the OS description at the top of the screen. I then tried booting up in normal mode, and tried to validate vista at the microsoft site, and once it goes into validation mode it never finishes...blank screen with a thinking cursor in the tab. And I can never restart the computer, it just freezes with the "logging off" screen. I always have to power it down manually. Should I continue to the security center? Thanks again. |

Re: Vista processes not working
Hi -
Please go back into SAFEMODE w/Networking. Is the Internet connecting? Please run msinfo32 and save it as an NFO file - START | msinfo32 | save in default NFO file (extension) format What is the brand, wattage and manufacturer of your power supply? |

Re: Vista processes not working
Hey
I retried putting the computer into safe mode w/networking, and again I get the black screen with the words "safe mode" in all corners and "Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 6001:Service Pack1) up at the top of the screen. Internet is connecting, because I'm typing this message in Normal mode. I'm not sure how to determine the wattage of the power supply. My AC adapter says INPUT is 100-240V, ~1.7A, 50-60Hz and OUTPUT is 18.5V, 3.5A, 65W. The brand and manufacturer looks to be HP. |

Re: Vista processes not working
The safemode screen you describe is normal. Is there anything else on it other than the s/m in the 4 corners and MS at the center-top?

Re: Vista processes not working
The last time I was trying to shut down the computer, I got a message saying that "AppBar Bullet" was running and it was keeping me from shutting down. Sounds like malware or a virus.

Re: Vista processes not working
Hi, firstly when safe mode is run for the first time after a system has been in use for some time windows can have trouble figuring out what to start or not start , so we leave it in the four corner mode (what you describe) for at least an hour most times it will continue into safe mode in this time. Now that app you mention AppBar Bullet is most likely malware so you will need to pop over to the security forum read the instructions before posting, they need you to be patient (the dark arts cannot be rushed).

Re: Vista processes not working
Hi
I posted in the security forum, just waiting for a reply. I did try out the safe mode again, with no luck. I waited for safe mode to load up for 3 hours, it still gave me the same screen as before. |
