My disk defragmenter won't work on my vista! Help!!?

i have been trying to run the disk defragmenter on my computer for a while. it says it is analyzing the disks, then it says "your file system performance can be improved". then i click on the defragment now button, and i pick the disks to defrag, it starts for a bit, then it just stops and it goes back to saying " your file system performance can be improved". it is really frustrating, i don't know what is wrong!

i asked around and eventually was told to down load auslogics defrag(free version) when i did so i kept getting error messages such as....

Result Description

OK file successfully defragmented
locked file in use, access denied
cancelled file defragmentation cancelled
free space not found unable to find free contiguous disk space
unmovable file unable to move, defragmentation error
cannot defragment file still fragmented, cannot defrag

any advice??

ps. can you give a detailed step by step instruction, i'm not very computer literate.

Hi.
Welcome to TSF.

How much free space is remaining on your disk? The problem you describe is usually the result on not enough disk space for the defragmenter to operate.

Select the Computer icon on your desktop or select Computer in the start menu list (press the Start Orb in the lower left). This screen will show how much free space is on your C: drive. If it is low, you will need to delete some of your files to make some space. If they are all important, you will need to copy them to a CD or Thumb Drive (USB), then delete.

okay, so now that i've done all that i'm about to restart my computer. if that doesn't work then what?

How much free space do you have? What is the size of your C: drive?

at this point in time i've got 20.0GB....

How large is your C: drive?

Click on the Start Orb and select All Programs, then Accesories, then right click on Command Prompt and select "Run as Administrator"
Type
Defrag C: /a /v
Enter

This will show the fragmentation status of your drive. It will take a minute or so.

To start the defrag from here type:
Defrag c:
Enter

it specificly says 20.0GB free of 69.6GB

okay i'm getting a message saying is not recognized as an internal or external command.

oh hahaha, stupid me i didn't space anything when i typed it...

bah but again it's not doing anything... all i get is windows disk defragmenter and that's all.

How long did you wait after entering the command and getting "Windows disk defragmenter"?

umm it didn't do anything but send that message. so i'm sure i waited a good minute or 2.

Okay I have been using Windows 7 too long.

Type Defrag C: -a-v to get the analysis. The analysis can take many minutes during which time nothing is shown. Even the defrag has no feedback until complete.

The system may be defragmenting the drive now since it probably recognized the defrag C: command.
