Windows Media Player 11 in Vista

I have a nephew who has a corrupt WMP 11 in Vista. I was looking for a way to reinstall it but I could not find it. I looked in control panel in programs but could not find a reference to a reload. I went Microsofts website and could only find WMP 11 for XP. Does someone know how I can reload this app in or for Vista?

Re: Windows Media Player 11 in Vista

Hi SA Spurs1, Wish I could give you the answer you want to hear but cannot. WMP is part of the core operating system and can only be reinstalled by reinstalling Vista OS. The WMP 12 that will be for Win7 won't be compatible with Vista either. There are many 3rd party players that are far superior to WMP and I would suggest your cousin try a few if that is all that is wrong with his Vista at this point. My WMP11 corrupted 2 weeks after install of OS. I use WinAmp,Sonique,Foobar,RealPlayer and CoolEdit to name a few. Here's a link if you want to further explore repairing WMP.

Best of luck to you.

Re: Windows Media Player 11 in Vista

To fix the corruption you just need to rebuild the library

WMP11 on Vista, please make sure you have this update - this will make your library more reliable. Then: the library is per user and can be found at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941651/en-us "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft". Shut down IE, Media Center, WMP, and anything else running (such as the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, which you can stop in the Administrative Tools:Services control panel). Then rename the "Media Player" folder there. At that point WMP should work correctly again.
