No sound device in device manager, no lan
I have an hp pavilion dv6700 notebook and I can not get the wired lan to identify any networks. In addition, I am getting the little speaker icon with a red x that says no audio output device is installed. So you would think that you should just reinstall the drivers but there is nothing listed in the device manager and there is not even a tab for gaming and sound controllers. I have tried to install the drivers but get the error that the media device for these drivers is not present. The network adapter appears in the device manager and I have reinstalled the drivers many times and in different ways but to no avail. What kind of problem could this be and what else can I do? Did I mention that I have recovered to the factory state and still get these errors? I would think that this has something to do with windows update...

Re: No sound device in device manager, no lan
Hve you made any changes in the BIOS that could account for the missing devices?
Different BIOS versions have differing ways to enable and disable hardware. |

Re: No sound device in device manager, no lan
At the time the two stopped working, I had done nothing with the bios. But afterwards I noticed that there was a bios update available from hp so I upgraded but the same problems remained. Also, I would not think the problem is hardware related because a couple of times after I had rebooted when troubleshooting, the lan started working, but a reboot after that, it was gone.

Try the Ethernet in SAFEMODE w/ Networking. Audio will not work in SM.

Re: No sound device in device manager, no lan
I cannot claim to know your particular computer, and perhaps my idea is far from what is needed, but it won't hurt to try this...
Any Windows updates to the sound drivers should be removed. I had lost all sound in my system until I got rid of the newest driver updates. I don't guarantee that this solution will work for you, but it's worth a shot. |

Re: No sound device in device manager, no lan
I have tried booting in safe mode but still nothing works. I have tried reformatting and recovering with the disks, but the recovery fails when windows tries to install the drivers for these devices. However windows still installed and i booted up and messed around for a bit and the sound and lan came back after one of my reboots but after another reboot they vanished again.

Re: No sound device in device manager, no lan
Are you using the HP factory recovery DVDs?
You said you formatted the drive -? If using the HP recovery DVDs, there is no need to reformat the HDD. The HP/ Vista recovery DVDs are an image of the factory default setting. Have you had your system validated at Microsoft Genuine Advantage? It is worth a try as you said audio & network both out. microsoft.com/genuine After you go to site, look on leftside/center for the validation button. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |
