64 bit vs 32 bit

I am thinking of getting a new laptop (HP hdx16t) with 4Gb of RAM and a 64 bit os to go with it but I have heard that 64 bit vista is buggy and most hardware doesn't have drivers for it and plug and play usb things (external hdd, headphones, keyboard, mouse) don't work.

Can anyone confirm or deny these things because i think a 64 bit os is a great idea in concept and I want it, but not if it isn't implemented well in vista.

Re: 64 bit vs 32 bit

x64 is great! however you're right in some hardware has some problems. when i got a new computer with vista x64, my $150 MICROSOFT bluetooth wireless keyboard will not work, because there are no drivers for 64 bit... now i have a really cool looking $150 media keyboard that doesnt do anything. Other than that... vista 64bit has been the smoothest thing ever.

Re: 64 bit vs 32 bit

I've used 64 bit Vista since it came out and have had only one issue with it (an older video capture card). I'm currently running Windows 7 64 bit and it's just as good, if not better.

Over the last 6 months there's been a great increase in the number of systems that have 64 bit Windows preinstalled. This lets you take advantage of the increased amount of memory that's addressable by 64 bit systems.

BUT - as a caveat, you'll have to be careful selecting drivers for your devices (and your antivirus/firewall products) as they require 64 bit in order to work. At work the other day we had a 64 bit laptop with iTunes issues. It turns out that the customer had installed the 32 bit version of iTunes and it "borked" the connection for his iPod. It uninstalled easily, and the 64 bit version went on nicely - so he was happy.

Re: 64 bit vs 32 bit

I use 64 bit Vista Ultimate and have only had maybe 4 apps in the past year not work. Those apps were mainly from the " XP " 32 bit era though.

I really enjoy the 63 bit version and love the fact that I am not limited to 4GB RAM and can run the RAM spec that my MOBO can handle.

64 bit is no longer a cripple, so to say. Infact I have no issues and my machine seems to run just nice.
