Microphone only picking up sound output!
Help!
Although this is not a Vista problem (I think) I posted it here. Feel free to move it to a more fitting place. Now then... When I turned on my computer this morning and proceeded to talk to my friend on Skype. My mic didn't work. I thought it was just some random problem that could be fixed by unplugging and plugging/restarting etc. but to make a long story short after many hours I found out that the mic is picking up the sound output from my computer and nothing else. I've tried plugging it into different jacks etc. but nothing works. I tried another mic and it worked. I would think that this was a problem with the mic but since it was working perfectly the night before and nothing has changed points at a random fail on Vistas/soundcard's part. So before going out and murdering everyone I see in rage I decided to post this here and hope for some help. Microphone: Logitech Fatal1ty Gaming Headset. Soundcard: Realtek HD audio manager (came bundled with my Gigabyte mo-bo) Thanks in advance and I hope for a fast reply! Last edited by Joggi; 04-19-2009 at 09:59 AM. |

Re: Microphone only picking up sound output!
Joggi,Sorry I am late to reply as I did not see your post. Try this. On your taskbar tray by the clock you should find a little red speaker. Right click on it and select click "Audio Devices"...then click on Recording tab...Right click on "Microphone" and select "set as default" then click OK.
Is it ok now in skype. I do not use skype nor have seen its interface. Does skype have a "Options" setting for "Input"where you can set to "Microphone" or "Stereo Mix" (sometimes called "what you here")? If so select "Mic" as imput on Skype program also. Hope that does the trick. Let us know the outcome. |

Re: Microphone only picking up sound output!
A different microphone worked - picked up voice like you would expect?
Go to Device Manager, expand the sound tree and un-install ALL - right-click on each, select un-install START | devmgmt.msc Re-boot. Vista will re-install the drivers. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . Last edited by jcgriff2; 04-20-2009 at 06:48 AM. |

Re: Microphone only picking up sound output!
Thanks for the replies, guys.
jcgriff2 I tried your method and I was optimistic it would work but it didn't :( I'm starting to think that the mic is just busted which would be weird since it's relatively new and it just happened over-night... Also, now a new problem has risen after I did your suggestion. Every time I click somewhere now I get that "ding" sound that happens when you try to click somewhere when another program wants attention. Any thoughts on that? But, alas the original problem still persists. Any more suggestions on either problems? |

Re: Microphone only picking up sound output!
Hi -
A few items, please - 1. System reports msinfo32 - saved as an NFO file START | type msinfo32 | save in default NFO file format - you'll see the NFO file extension when you go to save it DxDiag - DirectX Kernel Diagnostics START | dxdiag | bottom-center of screen - "Save all as text" - save as text file Zip these 2 up and attach to post. 2. Reliability Monitor - this will show you program installs, driver updates, Windows Updates, etc... for each day. Look at the day the mic last worked, then the next day - what changed, if anything? Did any Windows Updates or driver updates come in - ANY AT ALL? START | perfmon /rel 3. Device Manager START devmgmt.msc | View tab - enable hidden devices | any red/yellow flags without the Logitech mic plugged in? Expand the sound branch - what is there and what are the driver names/ dates? 4. Additional Detail Tell me the story again from your 1st post - did you power down the computer? Or was it in sleep mode? Hibernation? Where do you plug the mic in - input jack, USB, etc... ?? Where did you obtain the original drivers from (a CD that came with it)? For the new sounds you hear - RIGHT-click on sound icon in Norification area (lower right), select "sounds". 5. Homework ' Look thru this thread - information on your mic and apparent problems with obtaining current drivers - http://www.vistax64.com/sound-audio/...adset-mic.html Regards. . . jcgriff2 . Re: Microphone only picking up sound output!
OK. Here are the Dxdiag and msinfo32 specs, all zipped up and ready as requested. Of course there could always just be a bull**** reason for this such as that I accidentally ran over the cable from the jack to the phones with my chair or something but anywayz here is some additional info about the problem:
OK, I was playing some games with my pal and we were communicating (over Skype) with no prob at all. (although the mic did not work for maybe 3 mins before we got to talking but I just re-plugged it and it worked.) Then I went to sleep and shut down completely. The next day I was going to talk to the same person but when we tried to communicate the mic didn't work. I unplugged, plugged, restarted stuff like that but after many hours of tampering I realized that it was only recording the sound output from my computer. Well my comp is pretty notorious for it's random failness but this is just plain... stupid. Just the mic starting to record sound output overnight? Maaann... It is a headset with a microphone attached and has two jacks (the standard green, pink) I HAVE tried plugging it into various ports but no luck and I would have just accepted that it was broken IF it hadn't happened so randomly and since other mics work fine it kind of eliminates some weird settings. There were no drivers for the headset, I do NOT have the Fatal1ty sound blaster card. I just plugged it in and started talking, simple as that. I really want to fix this because the mic was really good quality and the headphones themselves aswell. Also it is hella expensive where I live. I know this problem is highly annoying but thanks for sticking with me anyhow ;). |

Check with your manufacturer's help site. Check WERCON for app crash information. msinfo32 was corrupted because it never finished due to application crashes/ app hangs/ other problems (it stopped while writing out WERCON info) - START | wercon | view Problem History - 2x-click on line item for add'l info Note all of the appcrashes with 0xc0000005 exception code - memory access violation. From what I could read of the corrupted msinfo32, you have Trend Micro Internet Security. It is more than likely responsible for the 0xc..5 app crashes. It needs to be removed. Re: Microphone only picking up sound output!
joggi, Did you check that they trully updated? Do you see the new driver in Device Manager under "sound and video and game controller" /dropdown/realtek/properties/drivers tab.
Perhaps try your mic/headset on someone else's computer. You did state: " I tried another mic and it worked. I would think that this was a problem with the mic but since it was working perfectly the night before and nothing has changed points at a random fail on Vistas/soundcard's part." Either way Description: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) Default Sound Playback: Yes Default Voice Playback: Yes Hardware ID: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0888&SUBSYS_1458E601&REV_1000 Driver Name: RTKVHD64.sys Driver Version: 6.00.0001.5334 (English) Date and Size: 12/12/2006 13:33:16, 922280 bytes Driver Provider: Realtek Semiconductor Corp. 12/12/2006--suprised you haven't had problems with sound by now..the update was overdue. ![]() p.s. If TotalRecorder is still installed (I use It on occasion) check under preferences that the "sound from programs only" is NOT checked. Also that "Use TotalRecorder Driver Exclusively" box is NOT checked. |

Re: Microphone only picking up sound output!
Hi Joggi, I feel your pain. I looked up your Logitech Fatal1ty Gaming Headset and am impressed, seem pretty much a excellent choice+ great reviews. Like anything made these days with mass production and cheap labor we really never know who the assemblers are. Take you GM car for example. A very nice e-mail to Creative Technology telling them how much you simply loved this headset and how you spent the extra buck to go with their product blah..blah..blah could help. Explain in detail how these economic times have left you destitute and longing for you only joy in life your Logitech Fatal1ty Gaming Headset. Go on in great detail and offer them your next born. Tell them how 4 of your friend have purchased their product after you allowed them to try yours. Then in closing ask if they could possibly repair yours at a reduced price. You may be surprised what a bug in the right ear may do. The $50 you paid only cost them $30 to produce and someone dearly loving their product...well..you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Not suggesting you
"lie" but stretching the truth is mearly a fib....kinda like how they glorify all the features in their advertising. If you know they are caputski simply package them up and send them back with the same letter, shipping wouldn't be all that expensive. Bet you they send you a new set. You've got zero to lose!

Re: Microphone only picking up sound output!
Hi Joggi, I have the exact same problem except it happened to my right in the middle of a convo. After countless hours of trying differant settings I tryed a differant mic and it worked. Did you get a replacement headset or just a mic piece and I do know this thread is a bit old but heres hoping.
