My System

Troubleshooting blue screen errors on a self-made system

I've been having problems with a system I built myself. When I use much of my PC's resourses (ie. any program more complex than Firefox or notepad) I wind up getting blue screen stop errors, and windows reboots itself. Often during the reboot, it blue screens before I can log back into Windows.

I read over the Microsoft STOP pages to troubleshoot the errors: many claimed I had hardware issues. I took my PC to a local repair shop and had them do a complete hardware check on my pc. They said that everything is A-OK. They ran my PC without errors for 4 days after a HD wipe and vista re-install. After I ran my pc for 2-3 hours and reinstalled a few programs (Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Final Fantasy XI, Gamepad software, Mozilla Firefox, etc.) the torrential downpour of blue screens resumed.

I've enclosed a few of the problem reports of the stop messages:

As I mentioned before, I'm looking to troubleshoot these blue screen errors and get on with my life, ya know?
Let me know if there is any more information that you need.

Thank you heaps in advance,
Harrixon

Also, how to I configure windows to hold on the blue screen so that I can properly SEE my blue screen and write down the information it contains? I tried opening the dump files but to no avail.

Hello

Disable automatic restart and you will be able to see the BSOD info.

Re: Troubleshooting blue screen errors on a self-made system

Don't know if this is any use but I had a similar problem.
I took my pc to the shop and they said that it was ok, couldn't find any hardware problems. I took it back reinstalled and blue screen, auto shut downs every 10-20 min depending on what was running.
It turned out to be a heat problem, the case i had was too small and not enough air circulating, I bought a new case and some new fans and that resolved
the Cd that came with my motherboard had a utility that measured system temp etc so your's might too if not this might help http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
it's a shot in the dark but it might help

Re: Troubleshooting blue screen errors on a self-made system

hi i found this 0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues (which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).
“STOP 0x0000008e” Error Message During Windows XP Setup {KB 315335} Win XP
Games: “Stop” Error Message That References Nv4_disp.dll {KB 325730} Flight Simulator, other games (wth Nvidia-based video adapter)
Your Computer Stops Responding When You Use the Highlighter Feature & the Font Color Feature {KB 829578} Win XP
0x1000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
Essentially the same error as 0x8E above.

Re: Troubleshooting blue screen errors on a self-made system

The first 3 BCCode's (STOP code's) point at a driver issue when accessing memory.
The last one points to a timer issue with a secondary core in the processor.

I'd start by disconnecting all external devices and seeing if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then plug them in one at a time until they start again.

You may also want to run the Vista Memory Diagnostic (link here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...torial146.html )

Finally, did the shop tell you why they wanted SP1 off of the system? This will leave you vulnerable to exploits that SP1 is supposed to protect against.

@makinu1ser2
I disabled the restart at BSOD, so now I'm keeping track of what errors I recieve. Thank ya!

@u27dd
As far as circulation goes, I have a Coolermaster Cosmos. This thing is massive.

I also have a Tuniq Tower 120 mounted on my CPU. Again, massive.

Temp2 36C
Temp3 25C

@usasma
They said that SP1 might interfere with the installation of some programs, so I should wait to install it.
I'll re-run the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and post results later.
Also, my only non-essential devices are Wireless Logitech KB/Mouse, XBOX 360 controller for windows, and my PCI wireless card.

I'm also in the process of downloading drivers directly from the product websites. I've had them up to date via Device Manager, but I'm downloading and installing them myself. SP1 is also on the "to-do" list.

Re: Troubleshooting blue screen errors on a self-made system

Updating stuff through Windows Update is (IMO) an uncertain proposition. In XP this feature was worthless, but it was improved in Vista and is even better in Win7.

Still, I prefer going to the manufacturer of the device's website for drivers. They have the unmodified drivers that they designed for the hardware.

FYI - I've got some eye issues, so I'll occasionally miss things in a post. In this case, I didn't spot the fact that you'd alread done the memory test. Sorry! :0(

SP1 has proven to be a great addition to Vista. At this time any program installation issues would be due (IMO) to problems with the programs rather than with SP1.

FWIW - you can test without the XBox controller, and even without the Wireless adapter.

What we've got here is a system that passed hardware diagnostics in the shop. And was wiped and Windows was reinstalled. No BSOD's were observed until you started adding stuff to the system.

So, IMO, it's most likely something that you've added to the system. You mentioned adding "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Final Fantasy XI, Gamepad software, Mozilla Firefox, etc." - so I'd look at those things first. I'd start with the hardware devices (the gamepad, etc) and move on from there (as programs will sometimes add their own drivers).

BUT, hardware diagnostics are not 100% accurate. Most in-store diagnostics involve running a hard drive test, a memory test, and some sort of motherboard test (either a commercial tester or a stress test). Complete hard drive tests are usually accurate, while the short/quick one's aren't. Memory tests can go awry if there's a bad component between the software and the memory sticks. Complete motherboard testers don't exist (well, maybe the factories that manufacture them might have some) - most mobo testers just test the common components and then run a stress test on the system. Results from them have to be interpreted by someone who's experienced with that test - because they do give false results.

I agree.

Can't speak much on XP and this feature, but it works very well in Vista & Windows 7. Now, if we could only get the OEMs to STOP installing their worthless update software, most of which was written for & during XP's time.

The only 2 areas in Vista that I have seen updated on a regular basis by most of the OEM driver update programs -

1. \windows\minidump folder
2. \windows\memory.dmp
