Upgrade to 3 Gb of Ram possible?

Hello! I have an Acer x3200 with 1 Gb of Ram which has another slot for an upgrade so I did add another 1 GB so that makes it 2 GB. My question is, is there a 2 GB of memory stick so I can replace the 1 gb to make it 3 gb?

Re: Upgrade to 3 Gb of Ram possible?

Look at the order from the last 1GB that you bought, it should have specs.

Search for those specs but 2Gb instead of one. I would advise looking at both sticks again and making sure they are they same, and that you don't mix n match speeds etc.

its best to have matching sticks of ram at the same size, same brand.

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Re: Upgrade to 3 Gb of Ram possible?

I would go as far as to say that I would only by the EXACT same, in terms of timing. So they all say 4-4-4-10 or 5-5-5-12 etc.

The best way to determine this without software is to read the memory sticks.

Re: Upgrade to 3 Gb of Ram possible?

Pofolks, my x3200 is different. It only has 1 GB of Ram and an extra slot which I place another 1 gb. SO is it safe to replace the original memory stick with a 2 gb one?

Re: Upgrade to 3 Gb of Ram possible?

No need to guess use a configuration utility at the ram manufacturers web site to be sure

Re: Upgrade to 3 Gb of Ram possible?

At work we've had a chance to try 2 different makes of DDR2 in systems.
By far the most problems are with enabling dual channel memory, but some systems won't even accept 2 different brands.

With 1 gB in one slot and 2 gB in the other slot you'll have to forgoe the benefits of dual channel (slightly faster) - and that's if it will even work. With 2 gB in each slot you'll have the that benefit. DDR2 is cheap now, purchase it if you can.

Since the system comes with the x64 bit version of Vista you should be able to utilize all 4 gB of RAM.

I think the manufacturer put 1 GB there and left the other empty because it is cheaper.
