[SOLVED] Firefox and IE7 crashing
Wasn't sure where to put this, as both browsers have the same problem. (LINK)
Recently, both of the above mentioned browsers have been crashing when trying to use a webcam from a simple flash thing. I have tested it there, as it is simpler to use than going through justin.tv, whice where I would normally broadcast, until this problem come. I have uninstalled both Adobe Flash and Java (Used flash uninstaller tool form Adobe) , rebooted, and reinstalled, no difference. I did this because Windows said Flash was the problem. Help?

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
Hi -
I went to the web site you posted and it caused 2 systems here to freeze - a Vista x64 and a Windows 7 x86. I am trying to find out more about that link and what it does. I have removed the link for now. jcgriff2 . |

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
Hi -
That is what I am told. Another tried it and had no webcam & rec'd message "No Webcam". I tried on a 3rd system here and it caused that one to freeze as well. Do you have installed software for webcam? Check Device Manager - click on view tab, enable hidden devices. START | devmgmt.msc - any red/yellow flags? Expand the "Imaging devices" tree branch. What is the name & date for the driver? jcgriff2 . |

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
Is that site the only 1 that IE & FFox freeze on?
How much RAM does the virtual cam use? What software is used? |

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
What do you mean by "the prompt" -- the UAC screen "Continue.." ?
By software I mean how do you create a device like a webcam out of thin air? Where is the lens? What program are you using? Last edited by jcgriff2; 04-11-2009 at 12:29 PM. |

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
I think we're making this more complicated than it is.
By the prompt I mean the flash player prompt to allow/deny something to access my camera/microphone Software is WebcamMax. And, to clear things up, it is a "Video Source", more than a virtual webcam. WebcamMax will take whatever source I tell it to (Such as my desktop, screen, video file, photos, etc) and output under a video source named "WebcamMax Capture Fast" |

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
Thanks - it is clearer now.
When I hear "webcam" - I think of my webcam used for messenger, etc.. Do both IE and FFox come up with that prompt? If so, is it the SAME prompt? Is it Adobe or more like internal system? If it is virtual - not "real" webcam, why would it seek permission, acting like it is a device? Do you have a "real" webcam on that system? I don't get such a prompt here at all. I just tried another system - same - no prompt. So you can record what you do on the desktop? No other software besides Adobe is loaded - no drivers loaded like laptop webcam or USB webcam needs? Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
Yes, both come up with the same prompt
![]() (Yes, I used testmycam again, but it is the same prompt on justin.tv, ustream.tv) I DO have a real webcam, a HP something (Can't remember) It is USB. Yes, I can record what I do, such as a game, video, application, etc I have a lot of programs other than WebcamMax. Note that the above prompt is only for web-based things, programs such as Skype and WLM do not have this, as they are not flash-based. Last edited by bwknight; 04-11-2009 at 03:11 PM. |

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
Do you get the prompt when you go on to main page of justin*tv or webcammax*com? Or do you need to log into an account?
I just went to both - and this system paused at webcammax site - about 10-15 seconds. I'm looking for an area to go into to try and replicate that screen so I can follow it behind the scenes to see what files (drivers) it accesses. I have HP w/ webcam & mike - problem with camera lens, but good enough to test. So no Live, Skype uses flash. Google talk, AIM? Any of them. Looking at those 2 sites - quick glance - they looked like Live or .... JC |

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
OK .. it even feels difficult to scroll down webcammax page. CPU & RAM shot up immediately.
How old is the system? Do you know CPU & RAM ? Laptop or desktop? Does it get hot - have you measured temps? what anti-virus? If you don't know answer - that's OK. I will be asking for files soon anyway. |

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
You said in 1st post that Windows told you the webcam was the problem. Did that screen pop up or did you go somewhere in Vista to look for error rpt?

Read more carefully. Windows said FLASH was the problem. And, the Windows error reporting screen popped up. |

Re: Firefox and IE7 crashing
I would not believe everything that Windows tells you. It usually points us in a direction. Windows error reporting grabs the closest one. Not necessarily THE one.
You have un/ re-installed Flash, so that should not be an issue now. Vista x86 or x64? Run IE 7 ast elevated admin level and see if it crashes - --> RIGHT-click on IE icon, select Run as Admin Crash?? |
