Blue Screen

Hello,

Recently, my windows vista has been going black in the middle of whatever I was doing online, then going to a blue screen that says error and a lot of numbers, the first set of which are many zeros and then a 7. Unfortunately I couldn't catch everything it said because it then automatically restarts before I have a chance to read it. This has only happened 3 times, but I'm worried it's going to get worse... Thanks for any help you can give me!!

Val

Re: Blue Screen

Hmm okay since no one's answering I'm wondering if it's because I can't be specific enough. New question: Is there a way on vista to go back and see what the blue screen said?

Thanks again,
Val

Re: Blue Screen

Hello

Disable automatic restarts on Vista.

http://www.winvistatips.com/disable-...estart-a84.php

Once it is disabled when the BSOD occurs it will remain on the screen.

Also try looking in the event viewer to see any errors listed.

Re: Blue Screen

Thanks for your response. My computer is now not letting me on for more than a minute before it goes black and then the blue screen comes on. I disabled the automatic restart but now I have it on safe mode and it hasn't gone back to the blue screen. I may start it normally to see if the blue screen comes up so I can write down the code. Thanks again for your help and any other tips you may have with this new info!

Oh also, how do you get to the Event Viewer?

Re: Blue Screen

hi you can try this from safe mode o run the Windows Vista System File Checker in safe mode:

Open the 'start' menu. Type 'cmd' in the search bar, do NOT press ENTER. Right click on the 'cmd' executable file in the search results and choose 'run as administrator'.

When the administrative command prompt window opens, type the following:

sfc /scannow

And press ENTER. Windows Vista will begin checking all essential system files and making repairs when necessary. This may take quite a while, and you may be required to insert your Windows Vista installation disk.

Re: Blue Screen

ok great thanks!! I also was able to write down the info that comes up when the blue screen appears if that helps any:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to your computer.

If it appears more than once, run system diagnostic utility supplied by your hardware manufacturer. In particular, run a memory check and check for faulty or mismatched memory. Try changing video adapters.

Disable or remove any newly installed hardware and drivers. Disable or remove any newly installed software.

Technical info:

STOP: 0 x 0000007F (0 x 80154000, 0 x 00000000, 0 x 00000000)

Re: Blue Screen

ok ignore the last post here is what i found this is the same for vista 0x0000007F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
One of three types of problems occurred in kernel-mode: (1) Hardware failures. (2) Software problems. (3) A bound trap (i.e., a condition that the kernel is not allowed to have or intercept). Hardware failures are the most common cause (many dozen KB articles exist for this error referencing specific hardware failures) and, of these, memory hardware failures are the most common.
General Causes {KB 137539} Win NT, Win 2000, Win XP
Windows Stops Responding with Stop Error 0x7F Error Message {KB 814789} Win 2000, Win XP (when running Terminal Services)
Windows NT 4.0 Setup Troubleshooting Guide {KB 126690} NT 4 (Recommendations for the current error message are buried down inside this article, which isn’t necessarily limited to NT 4.)
you may find more info in event viewer thats start control panel in classic view administrative tools event viewer

Re: Blue Screen

Thanks for all of your help,
The only software I could think of recently installing was WebRoot, an anti-virus. I un-installed it and everything is working now! (knock on wood) Considering it wouldn't let me on for more than a minute before, I'm pretty sure that was the problem. Thanks again!

Val

PS- I don't necessarily think WebRoot was the problem; I still had a subscription to McAffee that expires in ten days so it may have been because I had two anti-virus programs running at the same time.

Re: Blue Screen

yeah that would cause a problem two avs running is always a headache. also when you remove mcafee use the clean up tool from there website to clean it out of your system, this is always a good move with either mcafee or norton iam assuming that is what you will be doing when it runs out

Mc Afee removal tool - http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

Download to desktop. Right-click on icon, select run as admin.
Reboot upon completion. Then reset windows firewall to default settings.
