Computer keeps restarting. I fear the worst.
Hi,
I have a custom built desktop running Vista 64 ultimate, Core 2 Duo E6600, GTX 8800, 4 gig Ram, Antec 900 case, 700W PS. It crashed the other night playing a game. Now whenever I turn it on, the system boots up for 3-5 seconds, shuts down, and starts all over again ad infinitum. Did I fry something? Did I lose my hard drive? I can't access anything either - keyboard, mouse, monitor... all unresponsive during those 3-5 seconds. Thanks. |

Hi -
No kb, so I assume safemode out of the question - ? Insert Vista DVD and boot-up. Perform Windows Vista system restore. If not an option, perform system repair. Thoughts on re-install Vista? Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: Computer keeps restarting. I fear the worst.
I'll try starting it up with the disk, of course it's at a different location right now. But my concern is it restarts so quickly I don't even know if I will get any response with the disk in there.

Re: Computer keeps restarting. I fear the worst.
There are many possibilities for the problem that your computer has developed. One of them can be the "OS" or the Operating System that you run in your machine. Another and a third one can be the Processor, so check if your Processor is overheating or not, the PSU can also be a possibility of your problem, therefore start with the that one of the OS. Try to re-install another OS and check whether the problem persists.

Re: Computer keeps restarting. I fear the worst.
every auto restart is caused by a failure of somesort and provides a blus screen with a message on it. You probably see it very briefly. Here is what you should do.
1. Boot to safe mode (F8 on boot) 2. Go to start->right click "computer" and select properties-> on left hand side click on Advanced Sysytem Settings-> click on "Settings" in Startup and recovery" and then UNCHECK "Automatically Restart". Then restart the PC. Next time it tries to restart it will display the error message until you turn off the PC. Look for a 0X0... code or/and words_with_underscores_between_them and post it please. Nevermind...I missed the part that the keyboard doesnt work.

Re: Computer keeps restarting. I fear the worst.
3 - 5 seconds sounds like it isn't even getting past BIOS. If this is the case, then I would be harware related. Proc over heat, memory, etc. Try removing all peripherals to try and narrow down some device. Also, since it is custom built, check all your connections inside the PC. (Is everything seated correctly.) I have seen where some cards will work themselves just loose enough for the BIOS to not recognize the device.

Re: Computer keeps restarting. I fear the worst.
Sorry I missed those last two posts, for some reason I did not get an email response.
Anyway, through much trial and error and some "Geek Squad" advice I think I got this problem solved. By the way they told me it was the motherboard... so I bought a new one and I don't think its the motherboard anymore. I connected everything back up, hit the button and had a panic attack when absolutely nothing happened. So disconnected and reconnected everything... still nothing (mind you this is becoming ever so frustrating). Here's the strange part, my third tinkering attempt I don't remember exactly what I was doing but I left the power on and reluctantly found the problem (I think). The power supply cable does not power my machine when fully seated, but it does work somewhat when it is loosely inserted into the PSU leadingme to believe the cable or the PSU died... Anyway, I got another one in the mail. Hope it works. Thanks |
