[SOLVED] Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
Hi,
Having issues with Vista on my laptop, I get between 2 and 10 crashes a day. Everything just locks up and the only way out is a hard boot. Its a brand new laptop: Intel Core2 Duo T8300 2.4Ghz NVidea GeForce 8600M GS FUJITSU MHZ2320BJ G1 ATA Device (298 GB, IDE) 4GB Corsair RAM I have looked at older posts and have run Verify. I have attached the minidump. Can somebody please help as this is driving me nuts and am seriously considering spending another £100 or so to go back to 32 bit but really don't want to. If you need any more info, please let me know. |

Re: Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
Some extra info. Since running verify, I am now getting BSODs.
I have also installed SpeedFan and it seems that everything is running a bit warm, the GPU is at 82C! My other readings are: HD0: 45C Temp1: 58C Temp2: 54C Core0: 45C Core1: 45C I am unsure what motherboard I have and not sure how to find out. EDIT: PC Wizard says the board is Intel SANTA ROSA CRB Last edited by RickD43; 03-20-2009 at 07:46 PM. |

Re: Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
Hi Rick -
The bugcheck on the Vista verifier-enabled mini dump - 0xc1 (0x9801d870e10, 0x9801d870d5b, 0x8701f0, 0x23). probable cause = memory corruption, although nt (NT Kernel) was listed in the stack text. 0xc1 = SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION and means that a driver wrote to an invalid section of the special pool. The 4th parm 0x23 tells us that the driver freed memory, but nearby bytes within the same page are corrupted. Unfortunately, the driver verifier did not flag a 3rd party driver, but I found it interesting that sidebar.exe was listed as the process running at the time of the crash. What gadgets do you have in Sidebar? I'm looking for any gadgets that you may have installed that are not found in the Vista default gadget screen. In the event that a gadget in Sidebar is the culprit here, download and SAVE SysInternals AutoRuns (from Microsoft TechNet) to your desktop. RIGHT-click on AutoRuns icon and select Run as Administrator. Let it scan for a few moments (status on bottom-left of screen) then click on the Sidebar tab. Un-check every gadget. Doing so simply prevents them from running and does not delete them. You can re-check them at any time to re-activate them. AutoRuns - from Live SysInternals site - http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe Were there any other bugchecks besides 0xc1? I noticed the driver netr28x.sys, timestamp Tue Nov 20 22:18:59 2007 present in your system. A recent thread from the MSMVP AumHa forum indicates this driver may be unsigned. As you probably know all drivers in x64 must be signed. I don't know this to be the case here, but thought I would pass the info along. Here is the referenced post from that thread - http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php...c990f4#p209632 To check for yourself, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and look under Audio. START | dxdiag | look at bottom of DxDiag viewer - click on x64 dxdiag | save all as text file | review the resulting text file as is shown in the AumHa thread. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . EDIT: I also noticed you have VMWare installed. This may also be problematic. Any BSODs prior to VM being installed? . Code:

Re: Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
Hi, thanks for the reply. The only non-standard gadget I had was the All CPU Meter. Have turned this off for now, but not long after I turned it off, got another hang.
Run dxdiag, it all came back with no problems. The only other issue I did see in my problem reports was the following: Quote:
Quote:
VMWare has been on my system since day 1, so not sure, but I have disabled all the services (or at least set them to manual). I suppose I could remove it, but I do use it for business purposes as it is very useful. Would you suggest I remove it totally and if so, what can I use to replace it as I really need it (although I guess I do have it on my main home PC [XP still])? |

Re: Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
Right, since I switched the gadget off, it has been OK until just now. I have a different error this time though. THe BSOD said it was BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER and the minidump is attached.

Re: Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
Hi Rick. . .
I ran the 5 total dumps and found 4 different bugchecks - Code:
BugCheck FE, {5, fffffa8006c1b1a0, 80862831, fffffa8005879a18}
Probably caused by : usbuhci.sys ( usbuhci!UhciPollAsyncEndpoint+b3 )
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
BugCheck C1, {fffff98020316e10, fffff98020316d5b, a501f0, 23}
Probably caused by : Unknown_Image ( ANALYSIS_INCONCLUSIVE )
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
BugCheck A, {fffff80002617630, 2, 8, fffff80002617630}
Probably caused by : SynTP.sys ( SynTP+be6a )
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
BugCheck 50, {fffff6a129aa8d40, 0, fffff80002323321, 5}
Probably caused by : Rtlh64.sys ( Rtlh64+1f97 )
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
BugCheck C1, {fffff9801d870e10, fffff9801d870d5b, 8701f0, 23}
Probably caused by : memory_corruption ( nt!MmFreeSpecialPool+3fa )
0xa = IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL = kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory when it should not have (IRQL too high) 0xa = invalid memory referenced 0xfe = an error has occurred in a driver; however, the 1st parm 0x5 tells us this is a hardware problem and NOT due to a driver. A piece of hardware has a bad physical address in its structure. What do you have plugged into USB ports? 0xc1 = a driver wrote to invalid area of the special pool. The 4th parm 0x23 tells us that the driver freed memory, but nearby bytes within the same page are corrupted. How old is this computer? Why do you mention about having to spend "another £100 or so to go back to 32 bit" - you mentioned the system is new. Did it come x64 or x86? Your Realtek RTL8168/8111 Ethernet needs to be updated. Check if update avail from your manufacturer - Code:
Rtlh64.sys Mon Mar 05 08:29:43 2007 (45EC1B47) Code:
Arg1: 0000000000000005, USBBUGCODE_INVALID_PHYSICAL_ADDRESS The host controller is using a physical memory address that was not allocated by the USBport driver. These are the non-Microsoft drivers that I found in the dumps that begin with USB - Code:
usbgene.sys Tue Jun 26 01:46:34 2007 (4680A83A) USBGENE0.SYS Tue Jun 26 23:40:51 2007 (4681DC43) USBGENE1.SYS Wed Jun 06 00:08:32 2007 (46663340) USBGENE2.SYS Tue Mar 20 01:58:58 2007 (45FF7822) The problems you are encountering do appear to be hardware related. The 4 different bugchecks tend to confirm this. Bugcheck summary below; dbug logs attached. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . Bugcheck Summary Code:

Re: Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
The laptop is about a month old, which is why I have concerns. I am updating the Ethernet at the moment, thanks for that.
I installed Vista myself as it didn't come with an OS (my choice as wanted to go with 64bit and due to being a small business, I can claim it off my tax that way). The camera is built in and the drivers that are on the system came on a driver disk. Did have a few issues with it at first, but it seems to be working fine now, I only use it when making calls on skype, although i'm logged into skype most of the time. The only thing plugged into the usb port was a wireless logitec mouse, maybe its the drivers for that, I will have a look. Thanks for all the help, It is only crashing once or twice a day at the moment, so am not going as nuts as I was. Thanks again. |

Re: Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
Hi -
You're welcome. With the laptop being a month old and having so many problems, have you considered returning it or at least contacting manufacturer for help? Of course, you are welcome here with any question(s) at any time. It is just that you mention using it for small business - and you know what down-time could end up costing, not to mention your time spent on computer problems vs. the business at hand. I see you are from UK, and I was curious about tax deduction comment. I prepare US 1040, 1120, 1065, as well as State & Local Sales & Use (like VAT) tax returns. In US, I would expense (write off) entire purchase as 179 vs. capitalization & depreciation over useful life. What tax advantage is there for you to purchase Vista OS separate from system itself? Is it a hardware vs. software benefit? Are income and VAT rates different? 1 or 2 crashes a day is 1 or 2 too many. How is system stability now? If Logitech mouse a problem and it has drivers - get a Plug and Play (PnP) mouse. No drivers to install and it works with both x64 & x86. I have Logitech Laser mouse (cost about USD $60) and can use it on any system. Regards to you from USA - JC . Last edited by jcgriff2; 03-28-2009 at 03:20 AM. |

Re: Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
Sorry its taken a while to reply, figured it out in the end and sent it back, it was an issue with the motherboard, they changed it quickly and sent it back within a week, so no complaints there as still got my old laptop. Now haven't had one crash since it came back.
In the UK, its is more hassle if you buy a full system as you have to proves its for use by your business, whereas you can buy as many parts as you like and wright them off (we English are odd, but thats not news [must be having so many idiots running our lives]). Income rates go from 20% on earnings above ~£4.5k up to 40% above ~£40,000. Running a Ltd company, you pay personal tax on earnings, but you get tax off business purchases and expenses, you usually have a partner owning a % of the business and you pay dividend (which are a 10% tax credit). On all earnings (excluding expenses), the company then pays 21% corporation tax. That is a simplified version at least.. lol Thanks again. Rick |

Re: Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hangs all the time.
Hi Rick -
Thanks for posting back. Glad to hear system repaired and BSOD free. Tax structure for your Ltd looks like c-corp here - avg 30% but varies. Corp has 1 time option for subchapter-S election, no retained earnings, NET flows thru to personal & taxed at graduated personal rates (usually 25-35%; other brackets too), but no corp tax. Added benefit - can declare dividends under Sub-S (instead of 100% payroll), which are not subject to payroll taxes. s-election for small corps really. The deductions on parts are interesting. Here % allocated to business/personal use if applicable & if audited - prove it! Same with auto exp & other. I'm sure the appearance of lower rates here is smokescreen - they'll get it, whether state, local, energy, "sin" taxes, etc... It adds up to about 110% in the end like all !! Thank you for the tax info. I Hope all goes well. Any other issues, please come back. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |
