[SOLVED] Cannot run Windows Update

I am using Vista Home Premium. Recently I discovered I cannot run Windows or Security Updates. Windows Update or any file similar is not listed in the Services Menu. I have BITS. I even downloaded and installed Windows Update from MS, After it finished installing, it still was not listed in the Services Menu. I have visited numerous forums and tried a variety of solutions. So far, nothing has worked. One user thinks my system has been hijacked. I really don't know what that means but thought I would mention it.

Any ideas?

Re: Cannot run Windows Update

I have ran every antivirus and trojan program I can think of. I also ran Microsoft's subinacl.msi. It examined every file on my system (16 million) and did not find any problems. I also installed Windows Update Agent but it is not showing up in the Services menu. I am really stumped. I appreciate your input but I couldn't find any help in the references provided.

Re: Cannot run Windows Update

Hi copy and paste all below in the code box into notepad then in notepad select "file" then "save as" in the save box call it Update.reg and save to desktop open desktop and double click to merge into registry Reboot to take effect, this will add windows update to services.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv]
"DelayedAutoStart"=dword:00000001
"Start"=dword:00000002
Although you would do well to find out what caused this, a visit to our security forum.

Re: Cannot run Windows Update

I did as you suggested but received the following error message:

Cannot import c:\users\rudy\desktop\update.reg. The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

What now?

Re: Cannot run Windows Update

Thank You Joeten. The 3rd solution was the charm. I now have Windows Update working again. I still don't know what caused it to go away. However, it's a relief to have it back. Thank you. You guys are great!

As an aside, the Microsoft Support people couldn't figure it out. You should be proud of your abilities.

Rudy
