Confused Compressing Windows Vista Home Premium

I want to install WinXP on my laptop that came with Vista but retain Vista in another partition

Try Partition Magic or http://www.partition-manager.com/ (free trial) that is the easiest and best way to create partition for dual booting. I've run that the extend or shrink volume becomes tough to return if you ever decide to return back to Vista fully.
