Sequential Vista Woes... Automatic Update Not Operating...

Hello :)...
This resource is awesome, and thank you in advance :)...

The "Low Down"...

OS : Pre-installed Vista Home... "Premium"...
Toshiba satellite laptop...
SP1 installed (Seemingly)...
AVG...
DX10...

What initially was an attempt at coaxing SightSpeed (webchat / videochat software...) to connect / operate on a lappy turned into endeavors at activating windows update, which doesn't activate...
At all..

Windows security center clicks yield no response...
The taskbar icon reads "Windows can't check for updates" or something to that effect...

Upon clicking the taskbar icon, something seems to attempt to open, but is very swiftly exterminated/ eliminated ...

there are some forums with somewhat pertinent info, however, those mention an error code message, and in some of the instances of endeavoring to access / activate Windows Update / Automatic Update, it seems that there wasn't even a response...

Also, just incase anyone might have any pertinent information, the task bar often seems to freeze after "aggrivating" the volume controls...

after rebooting explorer, the taskbar icons no longer seem to function...

Might there be a "hotfix" for such....?

Anywho, any assistance would be greatly appreciated :)...

Thank you, and have an awesome evening/morning/afternoon/whathaveyou :)...

Hello : )...
Thank you frot he assistance thus far : )...

The scan was performed, and the text thereafter displayed was something to the effect of : "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I hope that might be of some assistance :)...
