After Vista Update CPU Keeps Restarting

After an automatic update last week, my computer went to the screen "configuring updates 3 of 3, do not shut down your computer," shut down, restarted, and went back to this screen. I have tried starting in safe mode, but the startup does not get beyond the configuring updates cycle. I have an IBM X60s and do not have an optical drive or Vista CD to reboot the computer, which I saw as a solution to similar problems. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Re: After Vista Update CPU Keeps Restarting

Hi, see if you can beg, borrow a copy of Vista's dvd any 32 bit DVD will do. When you have one post back. There is no way other then to use your recovery (which since your unit shipped with XP ) probably won't help either.

Re: After Vista Update CPU Keeps Restarting

Ok, so I got in using the Thinkvantage button at startup and was able to recover the system to a recent restore point. I went through and scrubbed everything, updating my antivirus, defragging, fixing the registery, the works. I shut it down to see if the problem was solved and it started up the loop again. Is there a way to uninstall the updates that I believe are messing up my system? Again, thanks for responding, and any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: After Vista Update CPU Keeps Restarting

Hi, as explained you need a copy of the Vista DVD you only need it for 10 mins so see if you can borrow one. You need to boot from the DVD then go past the language setup and select "repair my computer" let it run its startup repair go to advanced and select "command prompt at the prompt type:-

Code:
C:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml C:\windows\winsxs\pending.old.xml  Press enter
C:\windows\winsxs\cleanup.xml -> C:\windows\winsxs\cleanup.old.xml Press enter.
Do not worry if the last one fails reboot. You will still have the nag however shortly windows will open. Now go to start search and type "services.msc (without quotes) Navigate to windows update and right click select "stop" click apply. Next go to windows explorer and navigate to c:\windows\ software distribution, expand to show all in the right payne select all (in the right payne) and then delete. Reboot, windows will recreate software distribution and the nag will have gone away. Go back to services .msc and make sure windows update has started.

He said he doesn't have an optical drive so there wouldn't be anywhere to put the DVD. Why doesn't it have an optical drive, did you take it out for some reason? You're kinda stuck without one.
