Re: Windows Explorer Freezing When Deleting And Renaming A File
Hi -
Try the file deletions and renames in SAFEMODE. Is there anything special about these files - what are some of the names of them and what folders are they located in? Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: Windows Explorer Freezing When Deleting And Renaming A File
not at all as i am just deleting some programs that arnt needed, my computer fan also sounds funny. and when i delete and rename something the explorer freezes.
i cant do a virus scan as i have no program and getting one is just costing money when i dont even know if its a virus causing the problem. but yeah it just happened so suddenly and i dont remember using or deleting any important programs. although its funny when the explorer freezes i go to my task manager and end the process searchindexer.exe or something and it goes away but when i do it again it comes back its sorta like an endless process and i have to do that over and over again, still its better than booting the explorer so that was a good thing. but importantly i hope it gives some clues on whats doing this. any info is appreciated thanks for your reply. |

You don't need to spend money to get an antivirus program, you can download AVG, Avira, Avast, lots of others etc.
I think you should go to the security part of the forums to make sure this isn't the workings of a virus. http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html Post the logs required where it tells you to and not back here.

Re: Windows Explorer Freezing When Deleting And Renaming A File
Ok, firstly, I would get AVG Home Free Edition to scan your computer for viruses but I doubt it is a virus. You get Spybot Search and Destroy. It is an antispyware program that works very well and it is free. After you install it make sure you update it so that it can recognize the new threats. I have had problems like this cause by having a ton of spy ware.
Then you also may want to try getting CCleaner and cleaning up your HDD. Also did you just get Vista or have you had a working copy for a while and problems are just now arising? Because I have had problems putting Vista on a computer that didn't really have enough RAM or processing power for it. Sometimes even if you meet the minimum requirements you will have problems. Lastly, while I wouldn't worry to much right now about it, if you do buy antivirus programs it will work better than any free program out there. While right now I have no antivirus and I'm fine, when I do get a virus I always but a program because they do work better. I recommend Trend Micro Security, it is my favorite and hasn't failed me yet. |

Re: Windows Explorer Freezing When Deleting And Renaming A File
Hi, I think we should get back to the original problem. Now JC asked for details of the files and folders you were attempting to delete or rename and causing, you say explorer freezes.Your response references "programs" you don't want. How are you deleting them? You know to remove a program you should use the programs and features function of Vista and uninstall them there? The noise you here is it like a fan maybe spinning and then slowing down? OR more like a mechanical drive spinning like the HDD controller... one makes a noise like a fan with a whoose (ie you hear the force of the wind) the other is more like a mechanical whirl (metal or bearing sound).
