Question [SOLVED] Windows Media Player missing from default programs and program access lists

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble with WMP. I am unable to set it as the default media player because it does not show up in the "Set Default Programs" list or the "Set Program Access and Defaults" list. I have the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) installed, as well as Real Player, Quicktime Player, and Media Player Classic Homecinema. I would like to make WMP have all it's defaults but I can't do that due to this problem.

Here's a pic of the "Set Default Programs" window:

And here's a pic of the "Set Program Access and Defaults" window:

I've tried registering wmp.dll using an Administrative command prompt and it says it "succeeded" but it doesn't solve my problem. I tried going back to my earliest restore point and that didn't solve my problem either. Unfortunately, there's no way, as far as I know, to reinstall WMP in vista.

Can anyone help???

PS: I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit with all updates installed.

Re: Windows Media Player missing from default programs and program access lists

Hi...

I've attached a registry file which you can import into the registry.

All you need to do is unzip it, then double click to merge the file. As soon as you do that, WMP should be back on the list.

However, as with all registry editing, you should backup the relevant key first. To do that:
- Click Start -> Run -> type:
regedit
- Navigate to and highlight the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications
- Then right click the key and select 'Export'
- Choose a name...something like Default Applications then click 'Save'

Then import the registry file attached...you can view the file in notepad if you want to see the contents but it only contains the entry relevant for Windows Media Player..it won't affect any other applications on the list.

Hope that helps

Re: Windows Media Player missing from default programs and program access lists

Unfortunately, it still doesn't show up in the list...

I merged the reg file, checked the list and it still wasn't there. I restarted and still no luck. I checked the registry and the entry is there, but...

One other note: WMP is present in the autoplay options, if it matters. And WMP functions fine, I just can't set defaults.

Re: Windows Media Player missing from default programs and program access lists

I just seen your thread about the same problem on another forum and the second post there was to check out:
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/re...rograms-vista/

There is a registry hack which you can download from there which should sort it out.

Re: Windows Media Player missing from default programs and program access lists

I didn't notice the download! Unfortunately, I get an error:

Quote:
Sorry. 404 Page Not Found

I'm sorry, but the post or page you're looking for could not be found. It could be because of our recent re-design. Here are a couple of options that might help you:

* Use the search box in the right sidebar.
* Try scrolling through the monthly archives to the right.
* Try scrolling through the categories at the top of the page.
* As a last resort, you can focus all your mental energy on what it is you're looking for, and it might magically appear on your screen (not likely though).

You can also take a look through my most recent posts. Perhaps you'll find what you're looking for there.
Could someone upload the reg file?
