safely removehardware

Helllo. I recently had an icon show up in the toolbar that reads safely remove hardware. when I open it up it is my hard drive that is listed the
c and d drives. I would like to know how to get this off so someone don't accidently try to remove my hard drive. I have been trying to get my dvd drive back, which I did. I don't know, I may have changed something that made it appear.

Re: safely removehardware

Hi, I think you misunderstand the purpose of "safely remove" USB devices are Plug & Play—that is, they're ready to go upon being plugged in—you shouldn't just unplug them. A USB port has current running through it, so the power jolt caused by unplugging a "hot" connection can corrupt data on a storage device, camera, or mp3 player.

Safely Remove simply gives windows time to stop writing to the external device so it is basically "dead" in the machine and can then be safely removed. You should not worry about it's misuse after all you need to open the computer to remove HDD and to do this you would typically have ALL power to the system off.

My advice is to leave it and use it for the purpose it was designed. If you really wish to "hide" it right click on an empty space in the taskbar select "properties" go to "notification area" check the box that says "hide inactive icons" and then on "customize" you have a box with Icon and behavior as headings.Find "safely remove hardware" and click on the setting below behavior.. select "hide".

Re: safely removehardware

I did not understand its function. I got confused when I clicked on the icon and found my hard drive listed. I thought somehow I was trying to delete them. Thanks for the insite.
