My computer thinks it is running in NT?

I've been trying to deal with a NTVDM.exe error for a while now and the information on the error can be found on the blizzard tech support forums where I initially went to try and solve this.

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/th...862626&sid=1#3

But I just noticed something when I went to reinstall warcraft 3 today which I have never seen before.

Why would it think that I am running windows NT when I am running vista, and could this explain the ntvdm.exe errors?

Re: My computer thinks it is running in NT?

Vista is built on the NT platform - in use since Windows 3.1. Vista = NT 6.

What I read in your links is that the program is looking for 16-bit NT DOS. You can run 16-bit apps on Vista x86; not on x64.

Re: My computer thinks it is running in NT?

Something on my start up is trying to run a 16-bit application then; It only started doing this recently and to my knowledge my start up programs have not changed.

Spyware and virus scans are clean, and I have also cleaned my registry with Regcure and Registry Booster, which said it would fix the errors.

Re: My computer thinks it is running in NT?

Perform a system restore using a restore point prior to the install of the offending app -
START | type rstrui

I especially recommend this b/c of use of registry "cleaners" - they can be very dangerous to use and are really useless.

Re: My computer thinks it is running in NT?

Hi, could you check this registry entry :-
Code:
1) Go to Start , Run , type regedit
2) Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Explorer\Shell Folders"

If there is no string in there called "Programs" Right click anywhere in blank space in the right payne and select "New" then "string value" type "Programs" (without the quotes) then left click anywhere in blank space a new "string value" programs will be there then right click on programs and select "modify" in the value data box type below (where user name is yours.

C:\\Users\\%USERNAME%\\AppData\\Roaming\\Microsoft \\Windows\\Start
Menu\\Programs

Reboot to take effect. Now reinstall the program. BTW DO NOT RUN REGISTRY CLEANERS.

Re: My computer thinks it is running in NT?

Apparently I have no restore points, Which I know I have created before.

Checking the registry entry now.

Yes the registry has that entry.

Re: My computer thinks it is running in NT?

I noticed that I cannot run many programs to adjust settings, when I tried to go to folder options it would bring up something in DOS and give me an error message and the same thing for Windows security center.

Here is the error information, after clicking ignore enough times I finally got

Re: My computer thinks it is running in NT?

Hi, you might have had a minor registry problem that a reboot or restore would have fixed. The registry cleaner has thrown a spanner in the works, try a full restore of default .exe settings. Copy and paste all below into notepad in notepad click on "file " then "save as" in the box type EXE.reg and save to desktop open desktop and double click to merge into registry reboot to take effect.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.EXE]

Re: My computer thinks it is running in NT?

Restoring the default .exe settings did not solve the problem

Re: My computer thinks it is running in NT?

I just exchanged my laptop for another instead of messing with this until it's fixed, so you can mark this as resolved.
