Vista will not BURN

Hi JC,

This sounds very similar to my situation. I have a new (October 08) HP Pavillion with Vista 64bit Home Preimum. I have read through most of the posts here, when I have checked the registry location referenced in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461 and did NOT find either upper or lower keys.

I can burn CD/DVD's through Windows Explorer but cannot burn from applications such as I-Tunes or Quicken.

Your guidance is appreciated.

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi -

Happy Holidays!

I moved post to your own thread. The thread it references:

[SOLVED] Can You Read This? [DVD Burning Issues]

Please follow the instructions HERE. Attach your zip file to the next post.

Before doing so... please attempt burns w/ both iTunes and Quicken (This is financial software - are you burning back-ups?).

How do you burn with Quicken? How old is it? Do you have the most recent iTunes version?

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi JC,

Happy Holidays to you as well!

I have reverenced the versions of both I-Tunes and Quicken below.
I-Tunes version 8.0.2.20
Quicken 2008 R9

You will also find attached a screen scrape of I-Tunes when I attempted to burn a CD out of I-tunes. In Quicken I desire to perform a backup of the data base to a CD. As another aside I have Norton 360 on this box and it's backup element does not see the DVD/CD either.

Thank you again for your help!

Regard,
Bob

Re: Vista will not BURN

Have you recently installed an older version of any phone software such as Nokia PC suite? I had similar messages from iTunes and it was traced by a friend of mine who is a tech support to this. Apparently the older versions (those that may have come on disc with the phone) are not particularly compatible with Vista.
Any other software installs just before this started happening - there are a number of software items out there that are not Vista friendly.

Re: Vista will not BURN

No phone's

All the applications I added/purchased I checked first with the Vista compatibility page, not that the compatibility page is perfect but I did review that first.

Thank you for the tip!

Cheers!

Re: Vista will not BURN

It says you should re-install iTunes. Maybe you should try to.
Sometimes, when aprogram installs, if something happens, some files might be left out.
It would be best if you uninstalled iTunes, then re-installed it and made sure everything goes smooth without inturruptions.
Then try.

Re: Vista will not BURN

Another suggestion:
have a look at this from Microsoft Support - I had forgotten this in previous post - this was the first suggestion from tech support where I bought my computer - didn't do the job for me but might for you.
A number of programs (including iTunes) install upper or lower filters that somehow cause conflicts in vista.

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi Zuluclayman,

In this case I have scowered many if not most of the posts that apply or seem to apply. I have gone through the regedit process and oddly enough the registry does not have either upper or lower keys for that particular register.

I have uninstalled and re-installed i-Tunes at least 4 times with no satisfaction.

Thank you for your suggestions, truly!

Bob

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi. . .

1st item, please - run DxDiag and save as text file -
STAR | type dxdiag - bottom-center "save as text...".

Also - Vista System Health Report - PERFMON -
START | perfmon /report - save as HTML file

Zip them up and attach.

So your CD/DVD burners are working fine - just not for iTunes or Quicken..? Have you tried any other burn software?

One thing that I noticed in the many reports (THANK YOU !) is that iTunes runs out of the "\Program Files (x86)" folder - not "Program Files" - which is x64. Since all device drivers have to be x64 and digitally signed, I suspect that iTunes either doesn't have an x64 driver or if so, it is not digitally signed and therefore is not installed. I think Quicken is x86 as well , but I haven't yet located its program install to confirm. Do you go through the "burn" process w/ both then just end up ruining CD/DVDs? Does it just fail when it is trying to burn - or how far do you get in the process? I have not used either package.

I found the following in loaded driver listing... Can you tell me what it is?
Code:
pcd5srvc{e2af211b-86da020a-05040000}
PCD5SRVC{E2AF211B-86DA020A-05040000} - PCDR Kernel Mode Service
 Helper Driver	\??\c:\program~2\pc-doc~1\pcd5srvc_x64.pkms	Kernel Driver

Time to ask about Norton 360. I see in WERCON that Norton is failing rather frequently. I do not like Internet Security Suites like NIS, 360, KIS, etc... I have seen 1000's of BSOD cases from these Intnet sec packages. I suggest that you get rid of both via removal tools:

McAfee -- http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocumen...107083&lc=1033

Norton -- ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

Re-boot after each, then reset the Windows Firewall to default settings. If you are looking for free anti-virus software, try AVG 8 - http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe

The batch script you ran dumped 35,000 system event logs records. 29,826 of them over the last few days were this - Norton failing to start b/c unknown device INOP:
Code:
Event[34999]:
  Log Name: System
  Source: Service Control Manager
  Date: 2008-12-09 T 07:20:58.000
  Event ID: 7000
  Level: Error
  Description:

The SYMTDI service failed to start due to the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.

I also took note that you still had at least a portion of McAfee running and crashing your system after the Norton install. This is not good. Use the respective removal on each executed at elevated administrative level (right-click on icon, select Run as Administrator). Here are a few lines from WERCON depicting 3 app crashes - Regedit fails followed by Norton then McAfee:
Code:

When I un-zipped your attachment, I was somewhat surprised to find a lone kernel mini dump from a BSOD. Then I noticed the crash date during processing - Fri Aug 8 11:42:13.763 2008 (GMT-5). This happened ~ 2 months before you bought the laptop. I would contact the manufacturer - this is wrong and bad business practices. The bugcheck:

0x116 (0xfffffa80051f94e0, 0xfffffa6003a17c60, 0xffffffffc00000b5, 0xa), probable cause = nvlddmkm.sys - NVIDIA.

0x116 = VIDEO_TDR_ ERROR - an error (timeout) occurred during an attempt to reset the display driver.

I suggest that you go into WERCON and see if Problem History still there and if so, how many BSODs and appcrashes are there.

That is it for now. Please send those 2 files. I'll be back later today.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

.

EDIT: Go into Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and un-install the drivers under DVD/CD; re-boot. Vista will re-install on its own.

Re: Vista will not BURN

HI JC,

The Zip file is attached. As far as my burn expirence with applications such as I-tunes and Quicken, I never get the chance to ruin a CD/DVD as the application just does not recognize that there is a CD/DVD in the system.

Regarding McAffee, I was not aware that there was any McAffee on the system. I will run the removal tool.

This system was a "floor model" at our local Best Buy, the Geek Squad cleaned up most of the "stuff" that comes on new systems. They also created a D: partitian which houses all of the installed apps among other things.

Your comment about x64 bit drivers makes a tremendous amount of sense to me.

Thank you,
Bob

Hi -

Happy New Year!

Any news on the above 2 items? I wonder if the device malfunctioning is the DVD/CD drive as you now mention it is INOP. SYMTDI does belong to Norton from what I have ascertained. If someone knows otherwise, please help us out here.

Good to hear you will remove both Norton & McAfee - be sure to re-boot in between each. When both are gone, reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply (if hi-lighted) | Click OK

Did you know about the BSOD listing NVIDIA as the probable cause?

I strongly suggest that you look at WERCON -
START | type wercon.exe - hit enter | check Problem History to start - 2x-click on an entry for add'l info.

Did you un-install the DVD/CD drivers in Device Manager then re-boot? Can you play a DVD or CD?

Finally - run the Vista system file checker -
START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe above | select run as admin - then type sfc /scannow - re-boot to allow system to repair any files it cannot while system is up & running.

Regards. . .

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi JC,

Happy New Year all most. . .

Regarding the first item;
pcd5srvc{e2af211b-86da020a-05040000}
PCD5SRVC{E2AF211B-86DA020A-05040000} - PCDR Kernel Mode Service
Helper Driver \??\c:\program~2\pc-doc~1\pcd5srvc_x64.pkms Kernel Driver

I tracked this down to PC-Doc code which I started to install and then halted. I went to Control Panel and there was no indication that it was installed. I went to the directory and deleted all of the folders pertaining to the application.

Norton - I have un-installed this.

McAffee is not installed; again I checked Control Panel and did not find it there. I also followed the url you provided and it is no longer a good link.

I did run sfc /scannow. It found some corrupt files that it could not repair.

Earlier I did un-install the CD/DVD driver and allowed the system to re-install. I will do that again now that Norton is gone.

NVDIA - I have not had any BSOD with this system, unless I am mis-understanding something here.

Thank you,

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi -

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A few items... and then some -

This entry per my previous post indicates that McAfee was in your system - maybe disabled or un-installed since, but it was there:
Code:
12/6/2008 6:14 PM	Application Error	Faulting application mcupdate.EXE, version 6.0.6001.18115, time stamp 0x48980fcf, faulting module KERNEL.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791ada5, exception code 0xe0434f4d, fault offset 0x000000000002649d, process id 0x19c4, application start time 0x01c957cddebbe5d0.
You mentioned that you got the PC in October 2008. Because of the thousands of errors related to Symantec/Norton, your system log "rolled over" - got rid of old entries to make room for new. But your application log (app log) shows that your system was pre-loaded with Vista - or at least up and running on May 22, 2008 (note computer name in blue):

.

I could fill pages with entries from your log, unfortunately. Given what I have seen.

Furthermore, your system did in fact BSOD - the date on the dump file is September 16, 2008, although the time stamp in the dump shows August 8, 2008. It is perfectly normal for the system to adjust the system time and this is what I believe happened. The bugcheck was 0x116 - a TDR video adapter time-out. I have not seen any evidence of further BSODs or crashes related to same since then. Point being that this BSOD occurred BEFORE you got the system.

My recommendation at this time is if at all possible to return the system citing items in this thread - the evidence clearly shows gross misconduct or even fraud on the part of Best Buy. They sold you what I would consider a USED system - not a display model. I find the actions of this retail giant to be reprehensible.

If keeping the system - perform a Vista re-install to set the system back to factory defaults. The first order of business after such would be to allow all Windows Updates and manufacturer updates in, followed by running the Norton Removal Tool.

Sorry for the sheer bluntness here, but this IS NOT the 1st time that I have seen such an occurrence.

Any ? - please let me know.

Regards. . .

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi JC,

Happy New Year to you as well.

We did get the system in either September or October sorry to be vague, my wife bought it from her account so I cannot track it. It was a floor model. What does concern me is that I do not have any Windows Vista media. My best bet is likely to go scream at Best Buy for media.

As of this note Norton is gone, AVG is the current Virus protection and I have followed your direction for the Windows security setting. I have re-downloaded and re-installed i-Tunes with sadly the same results.

I will go to Best Buy to see about getting Windows Vista media set.

JC, would you expect me to have the same results if I attached a USB CD burner to the system? I plugged this into the system to minimize variables.

Thank you,

Hi -

Well, the exact date is not important. I just went on what I had and thought this could be another case of a system that was returned and then re-sold as new. It does bother me to see that the Geek Squad installed programs (have seen this b/4 too), but no un-installs of same. I do recall you mentioning that they moved files or something to that effect.

What exactly do you mean by "Vista media set" - I am unfamiliar w/ this term. Please provide some additional details.

RE: the external USB CD burner - did you in fact attach such a device and if so, did you have to load software for it? The last case I worked on regarding this subject (burning) basically led to registry corruption of the entries necessary for burning. This was caused by the introduction of several burning software installations that I believe caused the corruption. After a re-install of Vista, all worked 100% - like new. A Vista repair nor SFC (System File Checker) did nothing to help.

I can almost guarantee you that if you return to BB, they will in fact do a Vista re-install. If so, grab it before they start as they will tell you all files are lost. This has been my experience with their largest US competitor.

Regards. . .

JC

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi JC,

What I am refering to "Vista Media" is the Windows Vista CD or the HP OEM variant of Windows Vista CD. I don't have the Vista install CD.

Regarding the USB CD, it has not gotten anywhere close to this machine.

I cannot recall if you have looked at this system's registry or not but I cannot help but wonder if it is something that basic. However, you have reviewed a lot of this system's data.

Thank you for all your efforts!

Regards,
Bob

Hi Bob -

You're welcome, but I feel as if the results were not exactly close to what you had hoped. I of course can only relay to you what I find in your system. I found more on Norton and am somewhat puzzled.

Your system Application Event log shows Norton 360 was installed on Dec 14, 2008. I thought you had NIS installed back when. Did you install 360?

Here are entries for successful instal of Norton 360:
Code:
Event[947]:
  Log Name: Application
  Source: MsiInstaller
  Date: 2008-12-14 T22:25:58.000
  Windows Installer installed the product.
Product Name: Norton 360. Product Version: 2.0.0.242.
Product Language: 1033. Installation success or error status: 0.

Event[948]:
  Log Name: Application
  Source: MsiInstaller
  Date: 2008-12-14 T22:25:58.000
Product: Norton 360 -- Installation operation completed successfully.

Events similar to #804/803/802 found all through your app event log - Norton updating itself:
Code:
Event[804]:
  Log Name: Application
  Source: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler
  Date: 2008-12-15T17:47:30.000
  Information Level: success
Scheduler launched Automatic LiveUpdate.

Event[803]:
  Source: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler
  Date: 2008-12-15T17:50:49.000
  Information Level: success
Automatic LiveUpdate has terminated.

Event[802]:
  Log Name: Application
  Source: Automatic LiveUpdate Scheduler
  Date: 2008-12-15T17:50:49.000
  Information Level: success
The next run has been scheduled to occur at approximately 6:43 PM.

1 minute 10 seconds after Norton update completes, Windows Updates creates 2 system restore points:
Code:
Event[801]:
  Source: System Restore
  Date: 2008-12-15T17:51:59.000
Successfully created restore point (Process = C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs;
Description = Windows Update).

Event[800]:
  Log Name: Application
  Source: System Restore
  Date: 2008-12-15T17:52:07.000
  Successfully created restore point (Process = C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs;
Description = Windows Update).

22 seconds after the 2nd restore point created, Windows Defender update crashes - w/ type 5 - 0xc0000005 - a memory access violation that I would pin on 360 as culprit:
Code:
Event[799]:
  Log Name: Application
  Source: Windows Error Reporting
  Date: 2008-12-15T17:52:29.000
Fault bucket 25580367, type 5
Event Name: MpTelemetry
Response: None
Cab Id: 0

Problem signature:
P1: 80240016
P2: BeginInstall
P3: Install
P4: 1.1.1600.0
P5: MpSigDwn.dll
P6: 1.1.1600.0
P7: Windows Defender

.

Seeing more simply reinforces my suggestion that you re-install Vista. However, I think going back to BB/ GSquad after what I have seen in your files is big mistake. Youu have HP OEM system and can therefore go directly to HP and get HP factory Vista recovery DVDs - but you will probably have to pay for them - last check cost was < $20. State your case to HP - they have been known to provide discs free. You never know.

I show your system as:
Code:
System Manufacturer: HP-Pavilion
System Model: KQ496AA-ABA a6530f
System Type: x64-based PC

OS Name: Microsoftr Windows VistaT Home Premium
OS Version: 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001
You are runnning Vista x64.

Here is the HP site to order the Vista Recovery discs from -
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...reg_R1002_USEN

Here is the HP search page where the above link came from -
http://search.hp.com/query.html?cc=u...very+dvd&la=en

I would also recommend that you run Belarc Advisor as it will list your product key codes as the system knows them to be. Belarc takes a few minutes to run, when viewer appears, scroll about 1/2 way down - you'll see the keys.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

I really would get those Vista recovery discs from HP. This way you know they are genuine. 1st thing after re-install - run the Norton Removal Tool.

Any ? - please let me knwo.

Regards. . .

JC

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi JC,

Great feedback. As a note, when we first got the system it had a 30 day license of Norton anti-virus, when that expired I bought and then installed the 360 product. The first installation was botched (cockpit error I suppose), I then un-installed, then re-installed. I first discovered that the CD/DVD was not burning and attributed it to Norton. This is also about the time I attempted the System Restores. After having no success with this I started scowering the Tech Support Forum.

I will reach out to HP for the OEM disks, thank you for the contact information!

Cheers!

Re: Vista will not BURN

Hi -

Interesting about Norton NIS & 360. I thought I was seeing things at first - the hour was late here. I tested 360 about 1 yr ago and honestly found it to be horrible product. My 18 yr-olds boyfriend just got new Vista x64 - and it came with Norton 360 installed w/ early/mid 2007 out-dated drivers and all. He didn't know it was installed and on Christmas day w/ in 1 hour of boot - BSOD.

Well, I wish you luck with HP - even if $20 for genuine Vista DVD, not a bad deal. I did same last year. The HP recovery DVDs should come w/ the drivers for your system - but you still want to go to HP site for recent updates.

You are not that far from burning once again. Take care.

JC
