BSOD: "Haha you got pwned"

Hello forums,

First of all thank you for taking the time to read my post... I know it can be somewhat discouraging lending your vast expertise and knowledge to users here because more often than not the only reason they've come is for a quick fix so they can get on with their normal routine and not have to visit you anymore.

Now that I've gotten the formalities out of the way onto the problem.

I bought a PC about 3 months ago. It came with Windows Vista "Ultimate" installed. I noticed right from the get-go that sometimes when I turned my computer on it would 'stick' (for lack of a better term) at the Windows splash screen anywhere from 5-45 minutes. Typically there is a status bar that slides left-right-left-right while windows is loading, mine would slide back and forth a couple times and then just stop moving.

After about a month of this seemingly random issue it became more frequent to the point where 9/10 if I had to reboot or power up my machine it would not boot at all. I gave the hardware the benefit of the doubt and thought (not knowing much on the subject) perhaps this is just one of "Vista's many flaws" yet to be worked out so I decided to format my computer... and install the more reputable Windows XP: Professional to which I still own a copy.

Almost immediately after reformatting and installing Windows I began receiving these 'Blue screen of death' errors but only when playing the game "World of Warcraft" (I know it's terrible... I should thank my computer for not allowing me to play that game)

I struggled trying to isolate the cause of this problem as it was aesthetically different from the problem I was having booting... I would disable certain drivers (Sound/video/USB Ports) but the BSOD was so random it was almost impossible to pinpoint exactly what actions were causing the fail. The only one thing I knew for certain was that the errors seemed to only happen when playing "WoW". At first I thought... well for whatever reason it is having problems it would make sense that the errors would happen in the game versus many other applications, it is a HUGE resource drain running at anywhere from 350-500MB of RAM constantly while in the program.

Here is a short list of the errors I see most frequently

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
(sometimes with a driver listed with the problem, sometimes not. Drivers: nv4_disp.dll, realtekhd.dll, win32k.sys, atabi.dll)
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

TROUBLESHOOTING I HAVE DONE (initially in XP then in Vista after the format)

1.> After a few days having no luck with my problem I tried to reinstall the game. Perhaps it was a corrupted patch file or I had botched the install running applications while the original installation was happening.

2.> I reinstalled absolutely every driver I could find for my pc... making sure to get the most recent by means of NOT autoupdating but instead going to each individual's manufacturer's page and downloading the drivers directly. I used Everest to locate allot of the contact information/websites for some manufacturers.

3.> After reading up on some techsupport forums and information pages I started to think perhaps one of my RAM was bad. I had DDR2 PC4200 533mhz ram, 2X512/1X1Gig. I have 4 bus slots so I tried 12 different combinations of memory configuration on my motherboard. I tested each stick individually... I tried pairs... I tried the 3 sticks in different slots than how it was sent to me from the company (X,2,3,4 instead of 1,2,3,X)

4.> I downloaded Memtest86 (I think thats the name... fairly generic and well known memory stress test utility) unfortunately my results (imo) are inconclusive because I was unable to run it in "ideal" conditions. The program itself should be run via a bootable disk. My computer has no 3.5... so instead of burning it to a CD/DVD I opened the ISO with Daemon tools and accessed the EXE file in that manner (fail?) When I open the program it tells me that I have too much RAM to test in ONE program so I am supposed to split the difference and run multiple instances of the program at the same time (fail?) finally after passing 130-170% (fail? ***?) multiple times my computer would stall or encounter an error not relevant, coincedentally at most, and the program would crash or freeze. I should point out though the many times I've tried to memtest my RAM it always said, "X% completed, 0 errors"

5.> I contacted the company I bought it from, despite the fact that I am now out of warranty they told me if I shipped it down they would run some diagnostics and determine the problem for me. I packaged it up... shipped it away and waited (for what seemed an eternity) before I received the dreaded phone call we all despise, "Neil, we've ran all of our tests and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your computers hardware. I think it's the game you are playing and you should seek help from their tech support department"

So after I got my computer back from the company... I realized that the BSOD was no longer exclusive to the game itself. How they didn't see this in their "extensive testing" (*eye roll*) is beyond me but now my computer was freezing/rebooting/bsod'ing upon boot, during idle and while using minimal applications. The average runtime for my system is now anywhere from 1-15 minutes before failure.

I decided that I would reformat my computer and reinstall Window's Vista because when I was using Vista the problem was much more obscure and different than the experience I was having with XP:Pro. At least with Vista if I would just leave the machine running I experienced no problems at all (if I could get the thing to boot)

Last night I reformatted my computer... installed a fresh copy of Window's Vista and immediately after booting the first time the screen froze completely. I reset the computer it lasted maybe 5 minutes just configuring some of the finer details when I got a BSOD "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

Only after this point had I started to heavily consider the fact that it was indeed a hardware malfunction. I mean, I was pretty sure it was hardware before after reading so many tutorials on how to fix my problem... most of which point to BAD RAM but given the fact I didn't want to start spending money on something that MIGHT be fixed via software troubleshooting I resisted the temptations to start buying random odds and ends to fix my pc.

3 bad sticks of RAM? Unlikely... but if they were somehow damaged INSIDE the pc then there is a chance they all got damaged together... I went to future shop today and bought 2 new sticks of DDR2 PC4200 533mhz ram 2X2gig. I installed them and almost immediately after booting I got a BSOD (pretty sure of the 5 sticks of compatible ram I have now that one of them is not corrupt)

I really enjoy the leisure time I get to spend playing my computer. I consider myself very fortunate to own the toys I have now (1pc 2.8g celeron 1g ram 128mb video card <can't play WoW>, 1 Dell laptop 2.2g celeron 750mb ram 128mb video <can't play WoW> and a HP Pavilion Intel 2.13 Duo Core 2 Dual 2 2g ram (I guess 3.5 now 3X1Gig,1X512mb) 256mb video <can't run for more than 15minutes without laughing hysterically at me with a blue "PWNED" sign dangling in front of my face> but unfortunately I am in a bit of a rut for the moment when it comes to my computers.

I am currently on my laptop computer posting this *sob* story because my first attempt was on the pc in question but it failed/rebooted while I was typing. After I post this thread I will attempt to log onto that computer and export a DXDIAG to follow up to this query although I'm not sure which will be the larger WALL'o'TEXT.

PLEASE guide me in the right direction as I really don't want to start piecing together a 'custom' out of a 3 month old pre-built pc.

Okay Dxdiag wins for the Wall'o'text battle with a seemingly attractive crit for OVER 9000!!!

I'd like to take a moment and remind you that I have just recently formatted my computer so allot of the 'updating drivers' that I spoke of in the OP have not been applied to this installation of windows. If I could get the computer to stay on for more than 15 minutes I would gladly begin my hunt for the newest drivers.

Also my eventviewer will not show ALL of the problems I've been having recently due to the same fact (recent format) but if someone could explain what I'd be looking for in those debugger programs I would gladly copy/paste that as well. (eventviewer, minidump etc?)

I know it can be somewhat discouraging lending your vast expertise and knowledge to users here because more often than not the only reason they've come is for a quick fix so they can get on with their normal routine and not have to visit you anymore. Now that I've gotten the formalities out of the way onto the problem. I bought a PC about 3 months ago. It came with Windows Vista "Ultimate" installed. I noticed right from the get-go that sometimes when I turned my computer on it would 'stick' (for lack of a better term) at the Windows splash screen anywhere from 5-45 minutes. Typically there is a status bar that slides left-right-left-right while windows is loading, mine would slide back and forth a couple times and then just stop moving. After about a month of this seemingly random issue it became more frequent to the point where 9/10 if I had to reboot or power up my machine it would not boot at all. I gave the hardware the benefit of the doubt and thought (not knowing much on the subject) perhaps this is just one of "Vista's many flaws" yet to be worked out so I decided to format my computer... and install the more reputable Windows XP: Professional to which I still own a copy. Almost immediately after reformatting and installing Windows I began receiving these 'Blue screen of death' errors but only when playing the game "World of Warcraft" (I know it's terrible... I should thank my computer for not allowing me to play that game) I struggled trying to isolate the cause of this problem as it was aesthetically different from the problem I was having booting... I would disable certain drivers (Sound/video/USB Ports) but the BSOD was so random it was almost impossible to pinpoint exactly what actions were causing the fail. The only one thing I knew for certain was that the errors seemed to only happen when playing "WoW". At first I thought... well for whatever reason it is having problems it would make sense that the errors would happen in the game versus many other applications, it is a HUGE resource drain running at anywhere from 350-500MB of RAM constantly while in the program. Here is a short list of the errors I see most frequently DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (sometimes with a driver listed with the problem, sometimes not. Drivers: nv4_disp.dll, realtekhd.dll, win32k.sys, atabi.dll) MEMORY_MANAGEMENT PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA TROUBLESHOOTING I HAVE DONE (initially in XP then in Vista after the format) 1.> After a few days having no luck with my problem I tried to reinstall the game. Perhaps it was a corrupted patch file or I had botched the install running applications while the original installation was happening. 2.> I reinstalled absolutely every driver I could find for my pc... making sure to get the most recent by means of NOT autoupdating but instead going to each individual's manufacturer's page and downloading the drivers directly. I used Everest to locate allot of the contact information/websites for some manufacturers. 3.> After reading up on some techsupport forums and information pages I started to think perhaps one of my RAM was bad. I had DDR2 PC4200 533mhz ram, 2X512/1X1Gig. I have 4 bus slots so I tried 12 different combinations of memory configuration on my motherboard. I tested each stick individually... I tried pairs... I tried the 3 sticks in different slots than how it was sent to me from the company (X,2,3,4 instead of 1,2,3,X) 4.> I downloaded Memtest86 (I think thats the name... fairly generic and well known memory stress test utility) unfortunately my results (imo) are inconclusive because I was unable to run it in "ideal" conditions. The program itself should be run via a bootable disk. My computer has no 3.5... so instead of burning it to a CD/DVD I opened the ISO with Daemon tools and accessed the EXE file in that manner (fail?) When I open the program it tells me that I have too much RAM to test in ONE program so I am supposed to split the difference and run multiple instances of the program at the same time (fail?) finally after passing 130-170% (fail? **?) multiple times my computer would stall or encounter an error not relevant, coincedentally at most, and the program would crash or freeze. I should point out though the many times I've tried to memtest my RAM it always said, "X% completed, 0 errors" 5.> I contacted the company I bought it from, despite the fact that I am now out of warranty they told me if I shipped it down they would run some diagnostics and determine the problem for me. I packaged it up... shipped it away and waited (for what seemed an eternity) before I received the dreaded phone call we all despise, "Neil, we've ran all of our tests and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your computers hardware. I think it's the game you are playing and you should seek help from their tech support department" So after I got my computer back from the company... I realized that the BSOD was no longer exclusive to the game itself. How they didn't see this in their "extensive testing" (eye roll) is beyond me but now my computer was freezing/rebooting/bsod'ing upon boot, during idle and while using minimal applications. The average runtime for my system is now anywhere from 1-15 minutes before failure. I decided that I would reformat my computer and reinstall Window's Vista because when I was using Vista the problem was much more obscure and different than the experience I was having with XP:Pro. At least with Vista if I would just leave the machine running I experienced no problems at all (if I could get the thing to boot) Last night I reformatted my computer... installed a fresh copy of Window's Vista and immediately after booting the first time the screen froze completely. I reset the computer it lasted maybe 5 minutes just configuring some of the finer details when I got a BSOD "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" Only after this point had I started to heavily consider the fact that it was indeed a hardware malfunction. I mean, I was pretty sure it was hardware before after reading so many tutorials on how to fix my problem... most of which point to BAD RAM but given the fact I didn't want to start spending money on something that MIGHT be fixed via software troubleshooting I resisted the temptations to start buying random odds and ends to fix my pc. 3 bad sticks of RAM? Unlikely... but if they were somehow damaged INSIDE the pc then there is a chance they all got damaged together... I went to future shop today and bought 2 new sticks of DDR2 PC4200 533mhz ram 2X2gig. I installed them and almost immediately after booting I got a BSOD (pretty sure of the 5 sticks of compatible ram I have now that one of them is not corrupt) I really enjoy the leisure time I get to spend playing my computer. I consider myself very fortunate to own the toys I have now (1pc 2.8g celeron 1g ram 128mb video card <can't play WoW>, 1 Dell laptop 2.2g celeron 750mb ram 128mb video <can't play WoW> and a HP Pavilion Intel 2.13 Duo Core 2 Dual 2 2g ram (I guess 3.5 now 3X1Gig,1X512mb) 256mb video <can't run for more than 15minutes without laughing hysterically at me with a blue "PWNED" sign dangling in front of my face> but unfortunately I am in a bit of a rut for the moment when it comes to my computers. I am currently on my laptop computer posting this sob* story because my first attempt was on the pc in question but it failed/rebooted while I was typing. After I post this thread I will attempt to log onto that computer and export a DXDIAG to follow up to this query although I'm not sure which will be the larger WALL'o'TEXT. PLEASE guide me in the right direction as I really don't want to start piecing together a 'custom' out of a 3 month old pre-built pc.
