[SOLVED] Issues with explorer.exe

Starting yesterday, my start toolbar would continuously freeze. I'm not sure if the freezing corresponds to a program, but it usually happens when the processor is working to open new programs. The freeze is just... well, it freezes, I can't access the start menu, and clicking anywhere on the start toolbar gives no response. However, I can still switch between programs using alt+tab.

Usually I can fix the problem by running task manager, ending explorer.exe and running it again, but why is it freezing in the first place?

Also, today I tried to create a new folder, and explorer.exe freezes on that too. Regardless of where I'm creating the new folder, whether I'm in My Documents or on the Desktop, it freezes right when I right click and hover the cursor over New. I tried restarting, and that didn't resolve the problem. I googled around, and downloaded a "newfolder" registry at the Vista forums, but that didn't resolve the problem after merging and restarting.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Issues with explorer.exe

I ran safe mode; the problem persists

I did some searching on google, and I think the problem has to do with my user profile. Explorer.exe constantly takes up about 49-52% of my CPU (I have 2.7ghz core 2 duo), even in idle mode. I created a new user profile, went in there, and explorer.exe is taking up only 0-2%.

I guess the quickest solution would be to just create a new profile and use that, but transferring files from my current one to there is going to be a nightmare... Is there a way to resolve the problem without having to do this?

Re: Issues with explorer.exe

Hi. . .

Please run these 2 - I'll see what I can find

Vista System Health Report - save in HTM or HTML format -
START | type perfmon /report - 60 seconds viewer appears - save as HTML file

msinfo32 - save as NFO file
START type msinfo32 - hit enter - viewer appears. Save as NFO (sys info) file - you'll see NFO file ext when you go to save it

Regards. . .

Re: Issues with explorer.exe

Well, oops, after my message, I became quite frustrated and as a result, decided to move everything onto a new user account. This has solved the CPU usage problem with explorer.exe. Thanks for your help nonetheless.

However, I'll make sure to bookmark this thread, so in the future if I encounter this problem again, I'll be sure to run those tests!
