Confused Program icons suddenly covered by white square

I read a solution to this in another area of this forum.Unfortunately the fix is for XP and not vista.I cannot for the life of me figure out what to do.I've been at it for three days and I'm getting kinda' frustrated.
I would be grateful for any help.

Vista Premium
core 2 duo 2.13 ghz
4gb ram

Re: Program icons suddenly covered by white square

Hi, looks like your icon cache is corrupt this should fix it:-
Go to Start all programs accessories and right click on command prompt select “run as administrator”

type "taskkill /im explorer.exe /f" without quotes press enter

Now type each line and press enter after each line.
Note the spaces.

CD %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local

attrib -h IconCache.db

del IconCache.db

Close the window and reboot

Pencil Re: Program icons suddenly covered by white square

I've experienced the same problems twice within last three months since installing the Vista Ultimate version. I reckon the Vista I installed is corrupt. I've tried jenae's solution and the shortcuts became functional ( thanks Jenae ), unfortunately my icons did not revert back to their original ones.

The icons may have changed to the non-functional 'white/blank icons' however the PROGRAMS/APPLICATIONS ARE STILL FUNCTIONAL. So you needn't unnecessarily attempt to reinstall the affected 'icons/shortcuts'.

I suggest the alternative solution to a quick fix is to manually create new shortcuts/links by copying from the original source file the shortcut points to.

If you want to replace the shortcuts/links under the 'Start-All Programs' you can access the icons by right clicking the 'Start button' and selecting 'open/explore all users'. From there simply make shortcuts from the original programs from C:\Program Files.

Hope that helps to an extent.

Re: Program icons suddenly covered by white square

The other complete solution would be to restore it back to an earlier 'restore point', it worked with mine. All the icons and functions of the linked programmes worked as previously.
