Vista and username resolution
Nbtstat with Vista
Good morning/afternoon/evening, I am a network engineer tasked with inventorying which users are attached to which switch ports. With Windows 2000/XP, all we had to do was run a utility that uses the same functionality as "nbtstat -A x.x.x.x". When running this command and connecting to a W2k/WXP computer we would get, among the other results, the name of the logged on user as seen in the results below: Local Area Connection 2: Node IpAddress: [x.x.x.x] Scope Id: [] NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table Name Type Status -------------------------------------------- computer1 <00> UNIQUE Registered computer1 <20> UNIQUE Registered workgroup <00> GROUP Registered computer1 <03> UNIQUE Registered workgroup <1E> GROUP Registered KSADLER <03> UNIQUE Registered MAC Address = 00-30-xx-xx-xx-xx When connecting to a Vista computer (Enterprise SP1) we get the following results: Local Area Connection 2: Node IpAddress: [x.x.x.x] Scope Id: [] NetBIOS Remote Machine Name Table Name Type Status -------------------------------------------- computer1 <00> UNIQUE Registered computer1 <20> UNIQUE Registered workgroup <00> GROUP Registered MAC Address = 00-30-xx-xx-xx-xx IT would seem that Vista computers do not register a username with the WINS server like 2000/XP does. Does anyone know how to either make Vista report the username that is logged in OR a different method of extrapolating this data? Dave |
