[SOLVED] Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

So ive had my x61 for about 4 months now, NO problems at all.
One day when it was on, everything was extremely slow, so I tried to switch it off, but the "turn off process" never started, so
I finally had to shut it down manually by holding in the power button.

When I try to turn it on now, the "vista loading bar" shows, but after that, the wifi, harddrive lamps goes off, and I get a bluescreen for about 2 seconds saying something about "fatal error", "this system has been shut down".

How can I solve this?

In rescue and recovery I get an option about "factory system restore". But ive installed english vista ultimate, office etc. (Pc bought in japan). So factory restore will restore japanese vista business...?

I really need help, what can I do?

Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

So I had to re-install my vista ultimate because of some random fatal error.

When I installed I kept the first partion (with faulty vista) hoping I could save my microsoft office install, can I?

How do I remove this partion after securing office? Or how do I remove it? (If I cant save office)

Re: Bluescreen on start-up (lenovo x61 laptop)

Did you get a glimpse of the bugcheck (STOP error)? e.g., 0x00000000....

Are you sure recovery partition is in Japanese? Do you have the English Vista Ultimate disc you used for final install? Same w/ Office 2007?

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

I merged your 2 active Vista Threads, so posts may not be a direct reply to previous ones.

EDIT: You will have to re-install all programs - including Office 2007.

You can download and try trial version; there is usually area for you to enter key-code of purchased version. I did same w/trial version a few months back - converted to full retail version by entering product key code. Works fine.

RE: partition w/ Office on it - you can re-format it and use it (devmgmt.msc), but I have not been successful in merging partitions w/in Vista.

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

I have all discs, I used it to re-install vista.
Office student comes with 3 installs, ive used 2 out of 3 (but need the third for a computer coming soon). Your saying I can re-install without losing my third?

But if we ignore that question for now, how do I completely remove the old partion (it takes about 50% of my hard drive, so it must be done anyway)?

Thank you for your help!

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

The 3 "installs" for Office 2007 means that you can have 3 active installations running w/ same product key code on 3 different systems at once. I have used the same Office 2007 disc dozens of time for installations - but not more than 3 simultaneous installations ever existed.

Can you please run msinfo32 and save as NFO file -
START | type msinfo32 | save in NFO default format - you'll see NFO file ext when you go to save it

Zip it up and attach to next post. I'd like to see system info - space on partition is not lost. I'll explain after msinfo32 - if OK w/you.

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

Will do! Installing drivers and vista updates at the moment though, will try to do it asap. Although I must admit that my skills are extremely limited. Is "zip" an option if I right click the file?

Edit: about the "3 installs", that was great to know! :) thanks

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

Hi. . .

Yes... Run the msinfo32 and save it to documents folder or wherever as NFO file. Then right-click on NFO file and select "Send To", "compressed (zipped) folder". There s/b a file named msinfo32.zip in documents folder. Then reply to post here, scroll down - manage attachments, smaller screen will appear, click on Browse, locate msinfo32 zip file, 2x-click on it, you're now back at smaller screen - click on "Upload" - close small window, submit reply post.

My initial thoughts here are to have you re-format partition so it can be used for storage of docx, excel, etc... so if you ever re-install Vista again they will remain on partition untouched. This is exactly what I do. Only OS drive (usually c:) is re-formatted during Vista re-install.

Ironically, I have 26 Win Updates for this system now (re-formatted yesterday), so I too need a little time to get them in.

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

Ok, I hope I did this right. Here is it.

Alright, I would truly appreciate it if you could give me all advice you might have about how to make vista quicker. I have heard that there are several "default" functions that really eat computer power, but that these are easy to remove? Could you tell me about the worst, and how to get rid of them?

Also, I wish to do anything possible to avoid this random error again, what can I do?

And last, the partition. I had a lot of games and stuff, i.e crap on the last partition, I want to remove at least that, is it as simple as deleting the folders? (uninstall is usually necessary to remove all, but since they are on the other partition, im not sure if the games can be found in the control panel/uninstall?

Wait, this will be the last :)
What can you find out with the file I attached?
I saw there was many "Not availible" slots under the "video" option, does this mean there are some video drivers missing?
Please do tell me about anything that might need fixing...

I am a simple user, and simply want a working computer. :)

I hope you have time to answer my questions, I most truly appreciate it!

Best regards

Lx61

EDIT: Entirely off topic, but throwing all my problems at you. When I installed firefox last time (from the very moment it was installed), every time I turned off the computer, I saw some error page (0.5 seconds) saying something about internet explorer. (although I could never see what it said)

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

Code:

Description	Local Fixed Disk

Free Space	68,33 GB (73*372*311*552 bytes)

Description	CD-ROM Disc
Code:

Partition Size	5,42 GB (5*819*596*800 bytes)

Partition	Disk #0, Partition #1
Partition Size	143,63 GB (154*219*315*200 bytes)

Hi. . .

A little confusion here. msinfo32 reports 1 hard drive 2 partitions. One partition is 5.42 GB and the other as 143.63 GB. The 5.42 appears to be hidden recovery partition. The OS partition 144 GB shows 69 GB free space = 75 GB used. You just did fresh install - what is using up 75 GB? Maybe 30 GB could be Vista, so what is the other 45 GB? I don't see how you could access the other partition - no drive letter assigned to it.

Is the 5.42 GB partition the one you were referring to in this thread? 6 GB really doesn't buy you very much these days. Why do you think the Vista on this is faulty - the foreign language? What about system slowness - are you experiencing problems w/ this fresh Vista install?

RE: initial post - the apparent losing of power is troublesome, could be hardware related. See what this new install does. It is possible that software is culprit - but with re-install all data like mini dumps and event logs were lost. If BSOD returns, see if dump files were written - look in c:\windows\minidump post-crash.

RE: Firefox message - this could have been anything. Without knowing the context of the message, trouble-shooting impossible.

I don't see mention of anything you did "wrong" here to cause all of this. Many times if not hardware related, software updates to one area and lack of updates to another cause conflicts. I suggest that you go to Lenovo web site and see if any driver updates are available for your system. Use the automated driver update tool found THIS from THIS Lenovo driver update site.

You are running Vista Ultimate SP1, CPU = Intel Core2 Duo T9300 @ 2.50GHz, 2501 Mhz, 4 GB RAM. Your video is part of the Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset, the reason for the "unknowns" you asked about.

Network:
Ethernet - Intel 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection
Wifi - Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

Audio - SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio - adihdaud.sys driver

I know the wifi & Ethernet has had recent updates from Intel - but like any driver updates, go to your manufacturer's site as they may have modified the driver. The 965 chipset has had updates as well.

The wifi or Ethernet alone could have contributed to your system trouble. I have seen BSODs occur where Windows Updates come in, but not driver updates, anti-virus installation updates or some combination of these are not in sync. So have your system scanned and allow driver updates in. I have a Fujitsu system w/ many of the same Intel components - no problems to report, but I have re-installed Vista several times - usually to wipe away the trial/test items downloaded by the kids 7,10,14,18.

Please know that you can ask about anything you would like. No limitations here.... OK??

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

What you point out about used space is most disturbing, I have basically no idea where that space might have gone. Maybe it is the original Japanese vista business that is taking space?

When I got the machine it came with Jap vista business.
Install Vista ultimate english (maybe I didnt delete old jap vista? although I thought I formatted disc on vista install.
Then I installed vista again yesterday.

You say maybe 30 GB is vista, so maybe old vista+jap vista = 60 gb + random crap like games and multimedia I had make up for the last 15 = 75?
But this computer has not been used much, and the games installed are games about 8 years old, so we arent talking about GB's of games....

It was truly annoying knowing this and being unable to recover that space....
After the install yesterday, I havent had problems (but I havent used it much either, have been at work, I mostly use my desktop, as now)

There was a lot of driver issues on my first install, and basically yesterday too. Not real issues, but the lenovo "auto updater" (the thinkvantage updater you linked to) does not install for instance wifi driver, and who knows what else?? All the drivers can be downloaded manually from the lenovo support page, but I dont really know which ones the updater might have missed, and the list is long.
Vista found the video-, wifi drivers for me, and directed me to the place of download at intel.

On my previous install, I used both ADaware and AVG, there were reports or suggestions from the PC that these two interfered with eachother, or "might" affect eachother, maybe even this might have caused the blue screen?
I really hope it isnt an hardware issue, as that would be difficult to fix since its bought in japan...

It simply annoys me that it worked perfectly, and then suddenly one time is that slow, and then completely dies? Very frustrating for an ordinary user.

I will try to look around to see if there is any indication on that last 75 GB, although I will probably not find much as I dont really know how.

Absolutely true. I have been through 1000's of dump files where anti-virus and 3rd party firewalls conflict with then collide with each other and Microsoft drivers as well. The end result is always a BSOD, app crash or app hang (the blue circle followed by "Not Responding" while using IE7, for example).

I would advise you to stay away from AdAware and others like it. AVG 8 is a good anti-virus in my opinion and run it on 2 systems here right now - 1 Vista x86 and 1 Vista x64. Use it, the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. This is the combo I use and I have not been hit. Of course, nothing is foolproof - it depends on where you surf and what you allow in, too.

RE: the space issue - download/ install Treesize. Go to desktop, right-click on icon and select Run as Administrator. This product will show you space usage folder-by-folder. As you correctly noted, the entire c: drive would have been wiped clean by the re-formatting prior to a Vista install. So the Japanese version is gone, unless still contained in the smaller partition.

Apologies if the Lenovo driver tool was a problem. I have no way to test it. I did see that driver update list - the reason I suggested the update tool. You got the ones that I find in BSODs the most - video & wifi.

Last note on the space for now - I would say that 30GB for fresh Vista install including Windows Updates, driver updates and initial program installs is about the ceiling. My recent re-install of Vista x64 took up just over 30GB, now at 41GB.

Regards. . .

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

I not deleted the "program files" folder from the "windows.old" folder. That gave me 93.5/143 GB space. The ramaining "windows" folder in the "windows.old" folder is about 12.4 GB. So the "lost space" seems "gone"? Is it safe to simply delete the old "windows" folder?

Every time I start up the computer now, I get up an error message saying:

"windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close this program.."

Something to do about that?

Other than that, the computer runs very well again.

And again, if you have any tips on how to speed up vista in general, I would be happy to take that advice. Im not saying it runs slow. I just believe it could be faster. Ive already removed sidebar etc. from starting at start-up. Ive heard something about some "indexing" function and aero that can be shut down for further performance? Know how to do that? :)

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

Hi. . .

You can delete the entire windows.old file. Glad to hear that the space is reclaimed. I would suggest that you defrag the hard drive after that mass deletion.

Use Auslogics defrag -

http://www.auslogics.com/en/software...efrag/download

The service host (svchost) is interesting. Check out WERCON -
START | type wercon - hit enter | view Problems to Check & History - 2x-click on an item to obtain additional info. If you find svchost paste it into next post so I can see.

I'd like to see start-up and others running - download SysInternals Live AutoRuns from MS Technet -

http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

SAVE the file to desktop. Go to desktop, RIGHT-click on icon, run as admin (very important to run as admin)

Let it scan - status bottom-left of screen. When complete save it as an ARN file - you'll see file ext just like NFO file.

Zip it up and attach to next post.

Regards. . .

JC

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

Issue resolved! (for now)

So I found this method about running msconfig and disabling services, I disabled 50% of the start up programs and narrowed the trouble-maker down to "Thinkpad power manager".
So, I tried to uninstall the program in question.

-reboot

Rundll
ERROR: C:\PROGRA....\THINKPAD/UTILITY... (bla bla)
the specified module could not be found.

I googled a bit, and found the drivers page, with a thinkpad power managment driver. Installed this, reboot (without reinstalling power manager)

Same error as above.

Installed power manager again.

reboot.

Power manager starts normally and no Rundll32 error.

I guess that solves it?
I can only wonder what other important drivers lenovo hasnt given me automatically, and why??

Thank you very much for your help Jcgriff2, if there is anything you want to add, please do.

Im sure ill be back with new issues soon :( hehe...

Re: Re-installed windows, two partions, how to remove 1?

Great news. Great work !

A few hours out with the kids and find I am not needed any longer!!

It has been an extreme pleasure for me to work with you - I wish all were as forthcoming with information, reports, etc... as you. Many areas explored here - great thread in my opinion.

Most certainly come back any time with any issues or concerns. Feel free to send me a PM if I don't respond for some reason.

Nothing for me to add at this time except that AutoRuns is MSCONFIG on steroids - very powerful program... just be cautious which boxes you un-check - they can be re-checked like MSCONFIG. Just alot more boxes in AutoRuns.

Good Luck to you.

Warmest Regards. . .

JC
