Hardrive error?
Hey,
I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista. However, I deleted windows.old folder which was 50.1GB. Which took me back up to 202GB. I have just checked again and I'm back down to 154GB. I havnt installed anything near that size or downloaded anything. What could be the problem? Thanks in Advance, J0Y. Windows Vista™ Home Premium. |

Re: Hardrive error?
I have about.... 18GB (If that) use'd plus Windows Vista.
I removed the old windows folder when I upgraded which took me to 203GB, now I have no idea. It was 162GB earlier now it's 159.

Re: Hardrive error?
Run TreeSize at elevated admin level - this will tell you space used by folder.
Install - http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml Go to desktop, RIGHT-click on icon, run as administrator. Also check VSS - system restore. START | rstrui - turn off, re-boot, turn back on again. NOTE: you will lose all of your system restore points by doing this. Regards. . . jcgriff2 .

Re: Hardrive error?
I run TreeSize, here are the results:
![]() It says 157GB on TreeSize and 150GB on My Computer, however I still don't see how I've used 80GB. Vista can't possibly be that big. |

Re: Hardrive error?
The 13GB+ in the \users folder is very high - unless you have movies, pix, music, etc...
VSS reset gave you ~34gb - actually just right space used for VSS. You can expect it to use ~15% of your HDD space - 232GB x 15% = 34.8GB - so right on target. That will return now that VSS back on. If you want to see detailed listing of every file in the \users folder and space used - START | type cmd.exe | RIGHT-CLICK ON CMD.EXE | RUN AS ADMIN - CMD/DOS screen appears - paste command (to paste, right-click on top of DOS screen, select edit, select paste) - may have to hit enter Code:
dir c:\users /a /s > %temp%\0.txt & start notepad %temp%\0.txt Regards. . . jcgriff2 .

Re: Hardrive error?
What is in the users folder? Use the command that I provided in my previous post.

Re: Hardrive error?
Turn off or cleaned out? I don't know how to "clean it out". Even if there are no restore points system restore will still take about 15-20% of available hard disk space. Is it turned off?

Re: Hardrive error?
I just tested that and you are 100% correct. I turned off system restore and then turned it back on and created 1 restore point and only lost 3GB on the hard drive.
So much for my simple idea. :( |
