Constant Pause/Freezes

I am finding that anytime my computer begins to "think", especially when accompanied by some kind of a sound, I get a freeze of about 2 seconds. Moving the mouse doesn't move the cursor, sometimes the beginning of the sound is repeated 2-3 times in succession, and nothing can be done until that 2 second pause/freeze is up.

I am running Vista Home Premium with SP1. Computer is a Dell Dimension DM061, Core2 CPU 4300 @ 1.8Ghz, 2GB RAM.

Ran Spybot S&D which uncovered a few cookies but no relevant adware/spyware. A McAfee virus scan uncovered nothing. Just installed SP1 tonight and it provided no help.

Some examples of when the computer freezes: When about to play a video after loading, when any action is taken inside of a flash game or MSN game, etc.

Any ideas what this could be and what the next steps are? Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Re: Constant Pause/Freezes

Any chance this could be an IRQ issue? It looks like the following are all sharing IRQ 16:

(PCI) 16 High Definition Audio Controller
(PCI) 16 Intel(R) ICH8 Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 283F
(PCI) 16 Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB Universal Host Controller - 2834
(PCI) 16 Intel(R) P965/G965 PCI Express Root Port - 29A1
(PCI) 16 NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE

Re: Constant Pause/Freezes

what are you running
video card
cpu
m/board
ram
power supply
brand
wattage

check the listings in the bios for voltages and tempretures and post them

see if there is any error listed at the time in the device manager

run
