[SOLVED] Access Safe Mode From Shortcut or "Normal" Boot Menu
How can I boot into safe mode from either a desktop shortcut or an item in the "Normal" Boot Menu?
Hitting the F8 key at bootup is too finicky, and I don't like having to reset the boot mode in msconfig everytime I need to use Safe Mode. Please help! Thanx, Randy |

Re: Access Safe Mode From Shortcut or "Normal" Boot Menu
Hi, don't understand your problem it would take as long to click on a .bat file as it would to use msconfig to boot to safe mode. Use Msconfig.. far less likely to corrupt your boot loader.
Go to start all programs administrative tools "system configuration" right click and send to desktop as shortcut.

Re: Access Safe Mode From Shortcut or "Normal" Boot Menu
Jenae,
The problem is that doing it through msconfig you have to reset it each time to get back to normal mode. For tweaking and resolving problems you may need to go back and forth between normal mode and safe mode repeatedly. This makes resetting it each time a pain. That's why I need another way to get to safe mode so that, on rebooting, it automatically boots back to normal mode. Thanx, Randy |

Re: Access Safe Mode From Shortcut or "Normal" Boot Menu
There is no other way to get into SAFEMODE besides re-booting. Only critical system services run in SM and the others are blocked.
What is it that you do that would require SM so often? |

Re: Access Safe Mode From Shortcut or "Normal" Boot Menu
jcgriff2,
Lately I have been trying to install a piece of Anti-Malware software that is giving me a lot of trouble. I keep getting "access denied, you do not have proper privilidges" errors. I've tried an elevated command prompt, safe mode, "True" Admin account, safe mode AND "True" Admin account with different errors of the same sort each time. I've even tried taking ownership of the reg key without success. As you can see, I've had to go in and out of safe mode quite often. I also do Beta testing, and just toying around with new utilities; often requiring booting into safe mode to get rid of pesky little items that won't uninstall any other way. I don't mind rebooting to get into safe mode, I just mind having to toy with F8 or msconfig everytime I need to do it. 'Nuff said? Thanx, Randy |

Re: Access Safe Mode From Shortcut or "Normal" Boot Menu
Hi Randy. . .
Did not mean for question of curiosity to become one of interrogation. We all have our ways of doing things that end up w/ the same result; nothing wrong w/ that. I just couldn't imagine what SM could do for you that in some manner could not be accomplished in normal boot-up given the sys srv load & no start-ups. I saw your reply and thought about the methods I employ to obtain a "safe" level to hunt down a BSOD cause or a driver under a parent app using 100's MB RAM - not all that different from SM really. I suspend or kill off svchost dlls by the dozen and run a live (x64 virtual) kernel debug or simply write a kernel dump. It has brought the system down a few times. I have to be up in normal boot as the ones I am after don't execute in SM. Not much about permissions that the hidden admin can't deal w/. Sometimes it is necessary to utilize #1 NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM's covertly. May I ask what it is you are after - the registry key? Are you x86 or x64? You may already use the Microsoft SysInternals Suite - if not check it out. You can get these incredible apps (no installs) free and are constantly updated by founder of Winternals, Mark Russinovich. Click on SysInternals Suite link in my sig area & download the zip file from MS TechNet. Be sure to run them at elevated admin level. Look at Process Explorer (procexp) - it handles symbol files from MS WHDC. Others I use daily are AutoRuns.exe (GUI), LoadOrd.exe, ProcMon.exe, ... Awesome. Regards. . . JC . Re: Access Safe Mode From Shortcut or "Normal" Boot Menu
JC,
I just recently downloaded the Sysinternals suite, but haven't yet had a chance to check it out. Where can I get this utility that you mention? It wasn't (to me) apparent from your sig area. Thanx, Randy |

Re: Access Safe Mode From Shortcut or "Normal" Boot Menu
Hi,
Create another entry (Duplicate of the normal one) in the boot menu with EasyBCD or Vistaboot Pro, Call it VISTA SAFE MODE or what ever. Restart Boot to this entry in the boot menu. Select the Windows key+R to get the Run box. Type in msconfig. Select the boot tab and select the new entry (VISTA SAFE MODE) in the window. Then select safe boot Minimal Bootlog Then select apply. Reboot This will give you a safe mode boot. Paul
