Vista Won't Wake from Sleep

For some reason, my Vista machine has begun having problems waking from sleep mode. It will start up with all the lights and fans, but nothing is displayed on the monitor. At the same time, there is a high pitched noise, somewhat like a mosquito, that I only hear when it is in this state - I can tell when walking into the room that it is frozen up like this just by the noise...

The noise seems like it indicates something to do with hardware, but software is definitely involved as well. I have to shut if off manually, but when I start it back up it acts like it is "resuming" windows and takes a long time to do so - with problems and poor performance afterward. I have to restart again to get it back to normal.

It has only done this two or three times so far, but it has happened each of the last 2 days. It seems to have problems only when Vista Media Center tries to wake it up to record a show... Perhaps the noise is coming from the tuner?

Any help would be great,

Thanks

Re: Vista Won't Wake from Sleep

I have the exact same problem, just started beginning this week o last week, cant remember exactly when. Sleep have been working perfect until now. When the computer tries to wake up from sleep i also hear a sound that i only hear then. It sounds as if one of my fans is going 100% until i have to manually shut the computer down.

I have tried everything from System Restore to actually reformatting my C: drive ans reinstall windows completely, but i still have the same sleep problem. I just cant figure out whats the problem. I also upgraded my BIOS to no avail.

Somehow i want to relate this problem to me upgrading my Nvidia drivers, but i cant see how that could cause this problem. The fan that i think is spinning 100% sounds just like my GPU fan of my 8800GTS, when its in load in games. Anyone with some tips would be helpful.

Re: Vista Won't Wake from Sleep

I have an 8800 GTS as well... Hopefully it's not the card itself going bad... :( Although, it does sound as if the vid card could be the culprit. The more this happens, the more it feels like a hardware problem rather than software. Ug.

Re: Vista Won't Wake from Sleep

Yeah i'm starting to fear the same thing. But i cant for the life of me figure out what it could be. I have run Orthos for 10 hours strait and not a single error, so the RAM and CPU seems fine. And i experience no problems when running the computer.

Re: Vista Won't Wake from Sleep

I've taken it in to a repair shop... I don't have the equipment or time to diagnose it myself. (I'd test the video card on another machine and my comp with another video card, but I don't have them available...)

Re: Vista Won't Wake from Sleep

Ok, it would be interesting to hear what they do to fix the problem. Please reply with that info when you get it. Im right now trying several differen graphic drivers to see if it could be the problem.
