[SOLVED] Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop
Hello all... My wife has a del xpsm140 laptop which i reformatted last week with a fresh copy of vista before she started classes online with u of phoenix. All was great for a week and a half of class everythign was fine. Now when she clicks on any link to download anything it dies and restarts IE every single time. A little background.. I have done a chkdsk /r and also have reinstalled office it was causing problems.. office still is asking for a disk so i have totally uninstalled it.. same problems. She refuses to use firefox and u of p doesnt reccoment it. What else can i do short of another total reformat?

Re: Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop
Hi. . .
Try a few things, please. - START | type internet - select Internet Explorer (no add-ons) - test IE7 - Right-click on an IE7 icon and select run as administrator - test IE7 - boot into SAFEMODE w/Networking and test IE7 there Was this a re-install back to OEM defaults... or do you own a full retail copy of Vista? If the former, did the laptop come w/ any trial offers for items like Norton Internet Security, McAfee, Kaspersky, etc...? What anti-virus are you running and are you using a firewall besides the Windows Firewall? I assume Vista SP1 installed? That is weird about Office asking for the DVD each time. Do you have this same version installed elsewhere (you are usually allowed 3 installed copies)? Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop
I would suspect malware and scan the machine, but remember reading somewhere about a similar situation. The person with the problem resolved the issue by setting the date back on his machine to a time prior to the start of the problem, then rebooted and reset the date. Why that would work I have no clue, but it's pretty simple and if it doesn't work, you'll only have wasted about five minutes. Good luck.

Re: Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop
What a/v & firewall is running? Is this a re-install to OEM defaults (Vista pre-installed, purchased w/laptop) from recovery partition/recovery DVDs or is it a full retail version of Vista?

Re: Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop
Before even looking at anything else I would say to un-install comodo ASAP!
After un-install & re-boot, do these 2 items: - Reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings - START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply (if applicable) | Click OK - Reset IE7 - START | type inetcpl.cpl into the start search box and hit enter | select the Advanced tab | Click on Reset (bottom-right) | Click Apply (if applicable) | Click OK Test IE7. Anything? Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop
Hi. . .
Nothing personal meant by comments on comodo - I simply do not like 3rd party firewalls. I see them causing problems every day especially w/Windows Updates and Vista system services. Just my opinion. Please let me know how you make out. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop
I have a huge problem. I receive this message: System32\DRIVERS\isapnp.sys message out of the blue. I put the XP CD disc in and it won't even acknowledge that. I tried putting in the recover disc and nothing there either. I got into Bias one time but I have no idea what to do from there. Circuit city wants to charge me over $250 to bring it there.
Can someone please help me! I have to have my laptop for work. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop
Hi. . .
Glad to hear that this is solved. Having multiple a/v products tend to cause problems. Good Luck to you. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: [SOLVED] Strange Issue with Wife's Laptop
Anything is possible, of course. But from what I know of COMODO, it contains a/v modules. Whether disabled or not, those modules are referenced. It may be possible that COMODO corrupted AVG by quarantine or other.
In addition, it is likely that COMODO firewall prevented AVG from phoning home and obtaining updates. Not sure as I don't have your system information. Did you find AVG app crashes in the Event Viewer to indicate problem/corruption? This is interesting to say the least, yet something I have seen many times before. JC . |
