Windows Explorer continually crashing..
Immediately after starting Windows (Vista) I receive the error message: "Windows Explorer has stopped working." I've obviously attempted to restart, however, it immediately crashes again.
Can someone please help? I don't want to have to recover my entire system. Thanks in advance.. Re: Windows Explorer continually crashing..
Hi and Welcome.
I am unfamiliar with the QTFairUse6... app that you mentioned. Please tell me more about it. How long ago was this installed? From the information posted on the Explorer app crash, I can tell you that the item "Exception Code: c0000005" = 0xc0000005 is an exception code generated by an kernel-mode application (app) and refers to a driver that is illegally attempting to access an area of memory that it should not. For additional information go into WERCON - START | type wercon into the start search box and hit enter. Check the areas on the top left of the screen. Also look at the Reliability Moniter - START type perfmon.msc into the start search box - hit enter. View the Reliab Moniter looking for the red X's and expand the trees below. What anti-virus do you use and do you have a 3rd part firewall in addition/in lieu of Windows Firewall? Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: Windows Explorer continually crashing..
jcgriff2,
Thanks for the welcome and the quick reply. Here is a quick definition of QTFairUse. I was attempting to bypass the DRM in order to move some music files to a non-Apple mp3 player. "QTFairUse is a software application first released in November 2003 by Jon Lech Johansen. It dumps the raw output of a QuickTime AAC stream to a file, which could bypass the digital rights management (DRM) algorithm called FairPlay used to encrypt music content of media files such as those distributed by the iTunes Store, Apple's online music store. Although these resulting raw AAC files were unplayable by most media players at the time of release, they represented the first attempt at circumventing Apple's encryption. These early versions of QTFairUse would save only the "raw" AAC (not contained in an MPEG-4 (MP4) container), but later incarnations properly supported full conversions." Regarding WERCON and the reliability monitor, I am unable to use the start menu because Windows Explorer is continually crashes. I don't have enough time to Restart explorer and type a command in the start menu. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can work around this? AVG Anti-Virus is the software I use. Also, I do not use a 3rd party firewall. The problem started the day before yesterday. It seemed to start after I unzipped the QTFairUse file. Your thoughts? |

Re: Windows Explorer continually crashing..
Hi. . .
Thank you for the detailed information. Interesting... However, based on the 2003 date it is probably dangerous within Vista. My guess at this time is it contains unsigned/mis-behaving drivers that are not following Vista OS rules regarding kernel memory and are causing the 0xc..5 memory address exception (violation). I suggest that you boot into SAFEMODE and perform a Vista System Restore. START | type rstrui.exe into the start search box | right-click on rstrui.exe | select run as administrator. When the System Restore screen appears, go through them and select a restore point prior to the date of the install of QTFairUse. I do hope this works. Please let me know of the outcome. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: Windows Explorer continually crashing..
jcgriff2,
I attempted to run the system restore as you instructed, however, because Windows Explorer is crashing in Safe Mode as well, I wasn't able to right click and run as administrator. I did manage to get system restore to run through the help menu, but no luck. I'm still having the same issue. Any other suggestions??? |

Re: Windows Explorer continually crashing..
Hi. . .
Good and bad to hear of this solution... I hope that you did not lose too many personal files. Was there a repair option available? JC . |
