black screen on boot

So 2 nights ago I was watching a movie and I come back to my comp which was on downloading a game. So I move the cursor and it goes really slow and pretty much my comp froze. Hmm, so I had to do a restart and when I did I got black screen on reboot. Every F8 option would no work, always boot to black screen or freeze. Comp had been runnin fine for 5-6 months, don't know what the hell happened. Here are my specs, model # is there cause im not exactly sure specifics on hardware.

Gateway 5674 model
Vista 32 bit (not sure of sp)
3 gig ram
quad core amd
500g hd

So I bought a nvidia 8600 gts and a new power supply of 580W when I first got the comp. Everything worked fine too, til 2 nights ago (got comp about 5-6 months ago). Now reinstalling windows vista from the recovery cd loads up windows sometimes on the onboard graphics but it is very slow to start and half the time blue screens.
