Re: ntoskrn1.exe missing or corrupt

Also, since my last post, I have had an online chat with Sony Vaio Support - Kind of a waste of time, but even tried to install SP1 standalone pack they pointed me to, and same results as posted above. Just FYI.

Re: ntoskrn1.exe missing or corrupt

Hi. . .

I saw the PnP activity on the logs you spoke of. I also saw that several Sony services are failing. Windows Updates is timing out and failing.

The one program that seems to have no difficulty is Norton. I would like you to use the Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton from your system. It can always be re-installed later. Re-boot. Re-boot

Reset the Windows firewall to default settings.
START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | Select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply (if hilighted) | Click OK then reboot.

Got to Windows Updates and try again.

Regards. . .

Removed Norton using the link in your sig. Rebooted and got the same exact message as in my 1st post here. I can install things like Java Update and reboot successfully. Anything that requires windows config updates and autorestart causes the problem. The only thing I could do was use the system restore point to yesterday before the winupdates. Norton Antivirus hasn't visibly run since the 17th, and clicking on any of the Norton/Symantec icons yields no response. Using the update installer for it says "gti.msi" smissing, and won't go any further.

I think I am running out of options here, but I do appreciate you wading through all those logs. Is there anything else I can try? (Windows firewall is turned on btw, no exceptions)

I am not ready to give up, if you have other suggestions.

Re: ntoskrn1.exe missing or corrupt

Hi. . .

If you are willing to go on, so am I. . .

For info, I mentioned Norton because the Symantec Live Update was running every 15-30 minutes according to the logs.

I'd like some additional reports, please - namely Belarc Advisor. Please click on the link below in sig area, download and install. Go to desktop, right-click on Belarc, run as admin. A screen will appear - say NO to the update. The results will be brought up in your default web browser. For Firefox, save Belarc as a web page (html) and if IE7 - save as in mht format - Page/Save as/ Web Archive mht.

Please DO NOT attach this to post as it contains sensitive key code info. See my PM for email.

Regards. . .

Hey, sorry it took so long to get back to you.. after an addtnl online chat with another Sony Rep... he told me there was no way to resurrect the aforementioned krnl file, so he told me I had no option but to restore the C drive from the restore screen. I was willing to work longer on trying to find the problem, but I began to realize that not being able to install SP1 was a big problem. I had also figured out that despite all the clean scans, i must have had some kind of infection, or something.

I backed up my files as much as I could, and restored the C drive. Since then the only prob that's recurred is an occasional msg that Sony Smart Network has stopped working and shut down. Windows never finds a solution, either. It hasn't caused me any other troubles though, so I am not even sure how important Smart Network is.

Anyway, thanks a million for all your help. I have learned alot from reading the advice here, so there is some good thats come from all this.

thanks again.

Re: ntoskrn1.exe missing or corrupt

Hi. . .

You can go into services.msc (START then type) and look for the Sony Smart Network - if you find it there, disable it it if you wish. It has something to do with capturing still images from video cameras and is not a vital part of your system. You will find several that fall into that category.

Any ? - please let me know.
