[SOLVED] access denied to external hard drive on acer laptop

Hi... I have a Maxtor 500 G external hdrive attached to my Acer Aspire 5315 Laptop running Vista Home Basic.. I get an ACCESS DENIED message now when trying to access it . I used to be able to access it on the laptop. I recently restored my laptop back to factory settings tho have done the windows updates. I can access it in safe mode on the laptop just not normal windows mode? I can access the External drive from my PC running XP home. The usb ports are all fine on the laptop so it isn't that. I just don't know what else could be the problem :( Help please?

Did you by any chance install the software that came with it?

I have found that most external drives of this type (I have one just like it) install backup sodtware that is incompatable with Vista. This woiuld be one reason why it works in SAFEMODE and on your XP system.

I simply do not install the software and just copy files over.

Either un-install that software or perform a system resore using a restore point prior to the install of the software.

If it worked before you set the laptop back to factory settins, more then likely is it a permissions issue. They would need to be reset and you shouldn't loose any data.

Yes it ended up being as permissions thing. I had to go in and give permission again. :)
