I installed Vista-- but have a 'Q'

I run 2 HD's, i have XP running in C: for yrs.

I bought Vista home premium upgrade on DVD from Newegg with a HD for about $100 bucks (installed it activated it) in the other HD (of which is D: ) and all went well for a while then the boot manager in Vista messed up so I removed Vista a few months back ... and then fixed the XP boot and all is well now, I just don't have Vista installed anywhere.

Hence the question:

I'm getting a new quad core PC soon with all new hardware & 'no' operating system. I'd like to install Vista on the new PC, do you think MS will let me do this ?

Second, (if not) how about if I install XP first on the new PC and then install the upgrade Vista ?

Sorry about the long scenario but couldn't figure out a way to explain this any other way !!!

Re: I installed Vista-- but have a 'Q'

since you purchased and installed an upgrade version of vista, you must remove xp to be legal. You cannot install an upgrade version of vista on a computer that does not have an operating system on it.

You must have a full legal version of xp to install on the new computer if you want to use the vista upgrade. You cannot use one that came with another computer nor can you use one thats already installed. In addition as long as that vista is installed in your old computer, you cannot use it on the new.

Re: I installed Vista-- but have a 'Q'

Thx for the quick response but:
One, the XP pro 'Full' version & Vista 'upgrade' ver are legal and aren't installed on anything now. So, do you think it's ok to in XP on the new PC and then up-grade it using the Vista upgrade DVD ?

Re: I installed Vista-- but have a 'Q'

sorry, I misread your post, blame it on the heat. Just cannot get the apartment to cool. Its HOT!!!

if the xp did not come with the computer its currently on, if its not oem but a full retail version of xp, and if you remove it completely never to use it or its key again as long as being used to justified using the vista upgrade, then you can install it on the new computer then upgrade it to vista.

Re: I installed Vista-- but have a 'Q'

Thx sobeit;
What do you think the best way to install and handle this, install the XP pro full w/sp2 ver -- (activate it or not) and then install Vista?

Re: I installed Vista-- but have a 'Q'

the legal way is to install xp, then install vista. Vista does not ask for the disk like xp does when upgrading a clean drive but vista will still do a clean install once it sees you have xp and takes note of its key. You should not have to activate xp
