OS: vista 32 bit

Comp slows almost to a halt during long DL.

This problem started almost 2 weeks ago. It first came about when I was using blizzard's down loader. I thought it was just the DLer being crappy like usual but since then I tried dling a few other things from other sites the same problem occurs. It usually occurs 20+ minutes into the download. One more thing is that my internet connection drops. I have my comp hooked up directly to my modem with no routers.

This is exactly what happens:
1.Comp gets supper choppy. Music is choppy. Games are choppy. Programs are choppy.
2.DL speed slowly but surely drops and finally stops altogether.
3.My internet connection drops completely.
4.No error message for anything.
5.Diagnose and repair/unplug modem/disabling-enabling network connection all do nothing for the internet connection.
4.Comp remains choppy altogether and I am forced to reboot.
5.After reboot still no error message.
6.After reboot internet connection is fine and comp is running smooth.

Step I have done to remedy this:
1.Defrag using Diskeeper 2008. (Best defrager out there :P)
2.Turn off firewall while DLing. (Using bitdefender firewall had no results)
3.Deep scan system with bitdefender. (Been maybe 2 months since I last did a scan. Adware found in archives I dont know what to do with this. Bitdefender can not take any action.)
4.Pray that I dont have to replace hardware.

I pretty much give up on what to do I can not figure it out. So here I am begging/pleading/hoping for some help any more info you need you got it.

System-
vista home premium 32 bit
BFG 7600gt
AMD 2.6g AM2
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe
500g HD
2g Corsair dual channel ram
My comp temps out at 51c average according to Speedfan 4.34.
