BSOD and System Recovery
After I allowed my PC* to auto update, I got the BSOD upon reboot. I called HP and they were no help...out of warranty. I ordered the recovery disks and nothing happens...right back to the BSOD with the following error message:
*** STOP: 0x0000C1F5 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) I followed the directions that came with the recovery disks exactly. I simply can't afford the 60-$100/hour service charges everyone wants around town. *HP Pavilion a1712n with Windows Vista Home Premium |

Microsoft did put out a kb hotfix for this, but it has to be installed. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946084 Have you tried to boot into SAFEMODE by tapping the F8 key repeatedly? Select Last known configuration. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: BSOD and System Recovery
I haven't the slightest clue as to how to install a hotfix, but I will try the F8 idea for now and post what happens.
Thank you! ***Edit: I just attempted the F8 solution...I tried "last known configuration"...it went right back to the BSOD. I also tried again using "safe mode"...same result. I'm really curious as to why the recovery disks won't work. HP told me that the disks would fix any problem. Of course this is coming from the people that would only have a conversation about the problem if I paid for either an extended warranty or by-the-hour tech support starting at $59/hr.

Re: BSOD and System Recovery
When you say that the recovery discs don't work -
Do you know if they are loading when the pc boots-up (i.e., does it appear that the DVD is running)? Or do you know that the DVD(s) are bad? Have you changed the BIOS setting to tell the pc to read from the DVD 1st before the hard drive (during boot-up)? For BIOS change, hit F2 or F12 repeatedly during boot - make the change to place DVD 1st. Here is a screen shot of BIOS setup from an older system (< Vista): ![]() .
