Can't Connect to Internet via IE7 but can through Firefox

I have Windows Vista with IE7. I also have Firefox. I have no problem with Firefox, but IE7, which was working fine, until a couple of days ago, now refuses to connect to the Internet. I have a DSL connection, but IE wants to now dial up, despite my attempts to stop it. In any case, dialing does no good since I have an always-on DSL connection.

When I get the "cannot display" message, IE asks me to try "diagnose connection problems," which I do. The message then tells me to verify current proxy sever configuration. I do, and they are the same on Firefox. Yet Firefox connects, but IE does not.

This happened to me a few months ago on my previous computer, which had Windows XP. I posted a similar message in either this or another forum and was told, I believe, that it might be a registry problem and that if I changed a number in the registry, IE would likely work. I did that, and IE worked fine. But I've lost the instructions and don't know where to find them.

This is all the more frustrating because Norton antivirus only updates via IE, so I can't update my antivirus program.

Re: Can't Connect to Internet via IE7 but can through Firefox

Thanks, but I don't see anything there that would help my situation. What I really need to know is how to edit the registry. The last time this happened to me, I believe I went into the registry and changed a 0 to a 1, and that seemed to do the trick. I think there is a paper Microsoft publishes online with instructions, but I can't find it.

Actually, I have found a solution elsewhere. I appreciate your help. Thank you.
