Hand Off from Security to Vista
Hi,
Thought i had a malware issue but apparently it was not the case (see prior posts). The prior scans are attached as well as a Belarc. Currently using Trend Mircro for protection, all the windows updates have been completed. omplied with all the steps Reid had asked for in current help session. What prompted this plea was a general slowness of the system while online. Not sure if this is the trend micro protecting me or what but some websites just take forever to load if at all. one of them has been Yahoo where i had to go directly to mail.yahoo to sign on becuase yahoo wouldnt load from the main page Also my email (at yahoo) is working on its own , i think as i got six failure to deliver messages when in fact i havent sent mail out via group method. there have been two occurences of this in the past months since acquiring new hard drives. Windows sometimes gets transparent after restore from a minimized window. Normally if i reminimize then restore it goes away. With in the past 2 months there has been a small box of print from a visited web site left on the screen. Yahoo IM will not take my preferences on appearence it allows me to save them but for some reason it never does. Apparently i lost the extra.txt file . will scan again and post it asap thank you Last edited by Glaswegian; 07-04-2008 at 02:35 PM. Reason: Removed Belarc attachment |

Re: Hand Off from Security to Vista
Look in c:\deckard folder for the extra.txt file.
Has your system been declared 100% by Ried of our security center? Also, I have asked that the Belarc attachment be removed as it contains sensative product key code information. I have already downloaded it for my use to hopefully help in this matter. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . Last edited by jcgriff2; 07-04-2008 at 12:19 PM. |

Re: Hand Off from Security to Vista
Hi. . .
Do you have the Windows Firewall enabled - It appears that the Trend Micro firewall is enabled. If so, diable the Trend Micro firewall foe now and re-test. Also try booting into SAFEMODE w/Networking - run you Internet for a while - is is stil as slow? WHat about the rest of the system? JC Last edited by jcgriff2; 07-04-2008 at 12:24 PM. |

Re: Hand Off from Security to Vista
When in SAFEMODE, log on to the admin account (the one named Administrator) - and just press enter - don't enter a password. If you set a password for this account as well and don't know it. . . well let me know how you make out.

Re: Hand Off from Security to Vista
Hi. . .
I have looked through the Belarc, HJT and dss files and although I looked quite a few programs up, I don't see anything really out of the ordinary at this time - but you do have several heavy resource programs firing at boot-up like Office 2007, Trend Micro, Bluetooth stack (usually +/- 5 programs), iTunes, Quickcam10 among many others. The fact that running in SAFEMODE is so much faster tells me that we should go through the start-up list and see what can be taken out. So, there are a few things I wanted to ask you and to get from you. First, please tell me about your installed RAM. Belarc shows it as: 2550 Megabytes Installed Memory Slot 'DIMM_A' has 512 MB (serial number 00007161) Slot 'DIMM_B' has 2048 MB Did your system come configured like this? Please run a dxdiag report and save as a text file - START | type dxdiag.exe into the start search box | right-click on dxdiag.exe uptop | select run as admin - then save as a text file. Also - 2 others - Please click on the SysInternals Suite below my signature line and download the zip file. SysInternals is a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft - since 2006. The download comes from Microsoft TechNet. Unzip it and copy the autoruns.exe file out to your desktop or the folder of your choice. Then right-click on the icon and select Run as Administrator. The AutoRuns viewer will appear and will take about 10 - 20 seconds to load. When the bottom-left of the viewer indicates "Ready", click on File then save - and save it as an AutoRuns data file - ARN format. You'll see it. Also, please run msinfo32 and save it as an NFO file - START | type msinfo32.exe into the start search box | right-click on msinfo32.exe above | Run as Administrator | the msinfo32 viewer will appear | save it as an NFO file. Please zip these 3 files up and attach to your next post. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: Hand Off from Security to Vista
Hi. . .
I have asked someone from our Hardware Forum to look in on the memory issue - if there is one. When was the additional RAM installed? Was this an XP--> Vista upgrade? I did see in the reports that all Windows updates are in as of June 2008, although you are not running Vista SP1. I am unsure why this is. Has SP1 ever presented itself to you via Windows Updates? Have you ever tried to install SP1 outside of Windows Updates? Your Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 2.5gb RAM system should not be experiencing this slowness, so before proceeding from the software side, I'd like to get an opinion from Hardware. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . Re: Hand Off from Security to Vista
Hi. . .
No, please hold off on Vista SP1. I was simply asking about it. From the info that I have, all of your windows updates are in as of June 2008. There can be valid reasons as to why SP1 is not yet in your system - some have to do with conflicts that would occur between drivers in your system and SP1. Microsoft is aware of this as well as the various 3rd parties involved. One system here was just updated with SP1 in late June, and another is still waiting. I would like for you to run a memory test - memtest86+, found HERE. Also, I would like for you to run a hard drive defrag using Auslogics, found HERE, as well as a hard drive diagnostic test for your Dell system. Do you have such a test available to you or do you need for me to locate it for your Dell system? Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: Hand Off from Security to Vista
Hi. . .
It sounds like you were able to boot-up (?). If so, try and boot into SAFEMODE (hit F8 at boot-up repeatedly) and un-install Trend Micro. Then perform a chkdsk /r via Run/cmd. Then re-boot so it can run. You need to perform the memtest86+ - it is much more comprehensive than Vista Memory Diagnostics. You said "first result was a windows boot error screen just like i got prior to the HD replacement" - what was the boot error? Have you changed the BIOS setting to allow DVD/CD to go first, before the hard drive? I'd like to get your Event Viewer logs, as they may hold a clue. There should be >50 of them. They are located in c:\windows\system32\winevt\logs - and you will have to copy them out prior to zipping them up. The zip file will most likely be >4mb, so you will need to send via email. Please see my PM. Regards.. . jcgriff2 . |
