"Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
When I start IE 7.0.6000 running under Vista, it reports "Internet Explorer has stopped working". This seems to happen around 3-4 times before eventually it works. Subsequently it seems to stop working about 85% of the times I start it. Very annoying.
How should I proceed please? regards Simonides |

Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
Hi simonides. . . There are a few area within Vista that I suggest that you check. First, though - do you have a firewall installed besides the Windows Firewall? If so, disable it and see if that helps. Also. . . have you tried an alternate web browser such as Firefox, found HERE. If Firefox works without problems, this would mean that something is interfering with IE7 and the problem lies within and not with your Internet connection. Another way to test IE7 is to boot into SAFEMODE w/Networking - tap the F8 key repeatedly during boot-up. SAFEMODE prevents start-up programs from running and only allows critical system services to run. If IE7 works fine under SAFEMODE, then I would suspect a 3rd party program like anti-virus/firewall as the culprit. You should reset your IE7 Internet Options as well. Click on Tools (top-right IE7 screen), select Internet Options, select the Advanced Tab then reset - here is a screen shot: ![]() I suggest that you check these areas for further information if you have not already done so yet: • Problem Reports and Solutions: START | type wercon.exe into the Start Search box | right-click on wercon.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view "See Problems to Check'. • Reliability and Performance Moniter: START | type perfmon into the Start Search box | right-click on perfmon that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view both the Performance Moniter and the Reliability Moniter. • The Event Viewer - START | type eventvwr into the Start Search box | right-click on eventvwr.exe that appears up top | select Run as Administrator | view the various logs starting with the Administrative logs. When looking at the Event viewer, first go into IE7 and when a crash occurs, note the exact time. Then look in the Admin area of the event logs for items leading up to and including the noted time. You can double-click on an item to obtain further information about an event - but look first for any yellow (caution) or red (error) messages. Finally, are all of your Windows Updates in and did they install successfully? START | Security | Windows Updates | View Update History (on the left side). Good Luck to you. . . Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
Well, that's very kind of you to provide such quick guidance.
Firefox works fine. Turning off antivirus and other firewalls makes no difference. Reset IE7 Internet Options made no difference. Wercon wasn't very helpful I wasn't able to find perfmon. I had a couple of windows updates to install - that's done now. Event viewer says: + System - Provider [ Name] Application Error - EventID 1000 [ Qualifiers] 0 Level 2 Task 100 Keywords 0x80000000000000 - TimeCreated [ SystemTime] 2008-06-29T17:09:08.000Z EventRecordID 43661 Channel Application Computer Upstairs Security - EventData iexplore.exe 7.0.6000.16681 48113d17 unknown 0.0.0.0 00000000 c0000005 75ca0080 143c 01c8da0ad77107fb Does this help please? Many thanks simonides |

Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
Hi . . . The Event Viewer entry does show that IE7 module iexplore.exe crashed, but it did not provide us with the name of the actual driver. It did provide the exception code 0xc0000005 which means that the system attempted to access an invalid memory address. A few more items to try, please: • START | type int exp into the Start Search box | right-click on Internet Explorer | Run as Administrator | Test IE7 • START | type int exp into the Start Search box | click on Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) | Test IE7 • SAFEMODE with Networking - did you get the same error message while in SAFEMODE? • Logon to a different user account and test IE7. • Try THESE instructions from Microsoft Support. Please let me know of these results. Regards. . . jcgriff2 Last edited by jcgriff2; 06-29-2008 at 07:48 PM. |

Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
Thanks for a great set of suggestions. In order
• START | type int exp into the Start Search box | right-click on Internet Explorer | Run as Administrator | Test IE7 ==> this bring up dozens of shortcuts. None of which run. • START | type int exp into the Start Search box | click on Internet Explorer (No Add-ons) | Test IE7 ==> this bring up dozens of shortcuts. None of which run. • SAFEMODE with Networking - did you get the same error message while in SAFEMODE? ==> ID starts ok but doesn't show any web pages. • Logon to a different user account and test IE7. ==> IE fails as before. • Try THESE instructions from Microsoft Support. Start IE from another account - the problem remains. However, some success - setting internet options, general, use blank stops the problem. I tried a couple of other start pages but the error recurs. Start Internet Explorer 7 in "No Add-ons" mode also stops the problem. Any conclusions welcome? regards Simonides |

Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
Just to verify - I see under your name XP Home. Are you running Vista or XP?
Also, I ask as it bothers me little that perfmon was not there. If Vista - right-click on your desktop IE7 icon nd select Run As Administrator. Regards. . . jcgriff2 |

Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
Sorrry for any confusion - yes - this PC is Vista Home Premium.
I ran IE as admin from the desktop icon, but it wouldn't run - no response. However I did the same with a number of other programs and none of them responded. I've not used other vista systems so don't know if this is normal! regards |

So, when you right-click on any icon and select Run as Administrator there is no response - or is there no such selection - to run as admin? Do you get the menu per the following screen shot when you right-click on an icon: ![]() Do you have the User Account Control (UAC) turned off? Are you running under the Vista "hidden" Administrator account? Also, I would like to see the SIDs on your system, please - START | RUN | type cmd hit enter Now... copy and paste the following into the "DOS" command prompt box - EXACTLY as it appears and hit enter - reg query "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList" > C:\$hklm-users.txt & start notepad c:\$hklm-users.txt If you have problems with the paste using ctrl-v, then right-click on the top of the "DOS" command prompt box then select "Edit" then select paste. A notepad should appear with the registry key contents inside it. Then copy all and paste results in your next post and I'll take a look. Regards. . . jcgriff2 . |

Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
Hi again.
when I right-click on any icon and select Run as Administrator I see the menu. UAC is currently off. I've not heard of the Vista "hidden" Administrator account but am using a full admin account. SIDs - as requested. Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
Hi. . .
I see 5 admin accounts within the SIDs. Have you tried to logon to one of those (1000-1005) and test? JC Last edited by jcgriff2; 07-04-2008 at 09:14 PM. |

Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
For info, using the right-click and running as admin is tantamount to using the vista hidden admin account. It is called running at an Elevated Administrative level.
Leave the hidden account alone for now - it should really be used only in times of system crisis - and has a SID ending in -500. Yours is not active at this time. JC . |

Re: "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error
In addition to the problems with IE7 - I am also concerned why nothing can be run using "Run as Administrator" - from the right-click context menu.
Also. . . are all Windows Updates in? I see that you are not running Vista SP1. Regards. . . jcgriff2 |
