Re: boot from mounted drive
Programs like Daemon Tools create virtual drives only within the operating system environment, so you can't boot from them.
If your DVD writer isn't working we can suggest ways to fix it. Is it a work's computer where burning is not allowed? If you've already downloaded Ubuntu, save it to a USB data stick and burn it on another computer. Or you can download it on another computer and burn it to CD/DVD from there. You'll need to burn as a 'bootable image' rather than the usual 'data', then set the boot order in BIOS to CD first, insert the disc and reboot to load Linux. EDIT: An even easier way to try out Ubuntu without having to use a Live CD or create new partitions, is to use Wubi. Although the purist Linux users might frown on it, it's a very simple way to get into Linux as a beginner and can easily be removed by deleting from Add/Remove Programs if you decide not to keep it. It changes the Windows boot loader to give you the option at startup to boot into Windows or Linux.

Re: boot from mounted drive
thanks for the help. i currently have power iso and i mounted it to see if i can use it that way and it said that i need at least 256 mbs of memory and i have that. the problem with my dvd burner is that i can't burn cd/dvd rewritables. it will say burn complete with a cd-rw but nothing will be up there. dvd will just say error. i have a lite on it model number LH-20A1p. it burns pretty much everything except lightscribe and everything newer than that like blue ray. i'll just get some blank cd-rs tomorrow. thanks for all the help once again.
