Run .scr in compatability mode?

I like a screen saver made for XP and some say it works on vista but it won't work for me. If I right click it and hit test it works but if I try to use it, all I get is a black screen. So I guess I am asking is if it is possible to run it in compatibility mode like you can with a .exe

Hi GenPirate. . .

If not an EXE file, what is the file extension? Is it a .JPEG file?

Re: Run .scr in compatability mode?

Hey JC =]
Hows things?

Genpirate, have you double-checked the screensaver properties? to ensure that that's the screensaver being run and if there are any advanced properties that they are set correctly?

I don't think the problems compatibility, not if you can test the screensaver and it runs fine... Have you also checked your power options to ensure that the pc doesn't just sleep when the screensavers supposed to be on?

Cheers,
Jamey

Re: Run .scr in compatability mode?

Good morning All. . .

Sorry to interrupt again, but...

Apologies for my poor choice of words above. I was trying to ascertain if you were using an exe file to install a screen saver that originated from jpeg files. I had screen saver problems with a new Vista laptop in early 2008. That case turned out to be OEM involved - The manufacturer installed a screen saver which interfered with Vista.

There is one more thing that I would like to see, please - a dump of a registry key - perform the following:

Bring up an ELEVATED command prompt
START | type cmd.exe | right-click on cmd.exe up top | select Run as Administrator | answer the UAC prompt - Continue/enter Admin password

Now... copy and paste the following into the "DOS" command prompt box - EXACTLY as it appears - (paste = right-click on the top of the "DOS" command prompt box then select "Edit" then select paste):
Code:
reg query "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" > C:\$screen1.txt & start notepad c:\$screen1.txt
A notepad should appear with the registry key contents inside it. Copy all and paste results in your next post.

Also - what is the name of the scr file and how are you bringing it into Vista from XP?

Regards. . .

Re: Run .scr in compatability mode?

After about 3 hours of fiddling I found the problem to be a program called Ultramon, I messaged the author of the program via his forums and am trying to figure out why the program caused the screensaver to not work, I am now using widows built in screensaver manager for screensavers for the time being. The screensaver works fine it was Ultramons screensaver utility that was making the screensaver not work for some reason.

Re: Run .scr in compatability mode?

Thank you for the update. I am glad that you have isolated the problem related to the screen saver.

Please let us know of the outcome with Ultramon - it just may be of help to another user. Thanks.

Regards. . .
