Recovery failed

I have a HP Pavilion dv9500t that is less than a year old. It has 2GB of RAM and a 2 GHz Core 2 Duo (i hope I got that right) processor. It came pre-installed with Vista Home Premium. I upgraded it to Vista Business a few months ago. Later I discovered that I wanted the media features in Home Premium, so I contacted HP online chat. They said that in order to restore Home Premium I needed to put the recovery CD in the optical drive and restart the computer. This I did. Files load, the computer automatically restarted from time to time, and I even got to see the Home Premium desktop now and again.

About midway through the process, the computer ejected the CD and asked me to insert any supplemental discs that had come with the computer. Because I hadn't received any, I clicked Cancel as I was instructed to. The machine carried on loading more software, and at the end of the process, I got a message saying that recovery was complete. Then the computer restarted itself and this time said that the recovery had failed.

I have had to forcibly shut down the computer by holding the I/O button down because the only options I was offered were to review the details of the failure, which had something to do with a "setup timeout" or to "retry," neither of which I wanted to do having retried already several times.

Can anybody tell me what the problem is and, most of all, what I can do to fix it?

Many thanks,

Bruce

Re: Recovery failed

Hi BGHoag. ..

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

There should be a recovery partition on your laptop that will restore the laptop to its factory default settings - just like the day you opened the box.

re-boot and press the CTRL + F11 keys during boot-up. If not try the F10 key.

Good Luck.

Regards. . .

Re: Recovery failed

Holding down CNTRL F10 did not work; neither did CNTRL F11. On both occasions I got a very loud repeating tone. The tone continued even after I released the keys several more times. Then I was taken to the Recovery Manager screen to begin the faulty process all over again.

What's my next step?

Re: Recovery failed

Offtopic: Wow, I have the exact same computer, same processor, same OS, same everything.

I had that problem before also.

Are you using System Restore or HP recovery?

Re: Recovery failed

I have tried both. I tried the recovery disk first, because that's what HP Online Chat told me to do. Then I tried the System Restore because that's what I was told to do in this forum. Neither method worked. What did you have to do to get it to work?

Re: Recovery failed

Try the F10 key by itself.

Have you been to an option that DOES NOT require the DVD?

Re: Recovery failed

call tech support. If it prompts for the supplemental cd than it requires it as far as I know.

Re: Recovery failed

Have you tried a system restore in safe mode?

Re: Recovery failed

I think I need to post a summary of what has been suggested thus far.

I've been told to press F10, F11, either with the CNTRL key, to boot in safe mode, and to recover with or without the DVD.

None of these solutions have worked. Pressing the F keys with or without the CNTRL key results in a series of very loud tones. No matter what I do, at the end of the process, I'm told the recovery process has failed.

When I turn on the computer I am brought immediately to the Recovery Manager Screen. In fact, the only way I can turn off the computer is by holding down the I/O button until it shuts down.

Now, given what I've just said, what would all of you do in these circumstances?

Bruce

Re: Recovery failed

Something similar happened with me to. My computer was messed up and would freeze everytime I clicked something.

Everytime I tried to recover, it would give me a message saying that the system restore had failed.

I ran a winsockfix and that solved my problem of my computer freezing, i'm not sure if it solved the system restore had failed problem.

I don't really reccomend it though.

Re: Recovery failed

I spent an hour with HP's online chat yesterday. They concluded that my recovery disc was corrupted and are sending a replacement. One interesting thing that emerged from all this is that the Recovery Welcome screen that I saw and the one they saw were different. In an earlier post, JCGriff2 suggested that I choose the option that did not require a DVD. This option was not available to me on my screen. In fact, the only thing my screen said was that the program would help me to recover. There were no choices. Also, when I clicked Advanced Options, there were two radio buttons, but nothing printed after them; so, I didn't know what I was being offered. Thanks to all those who tried to solve this problem for me.
