Re: I need help, with the internet!

Hi, i've signed up here on the strength of this thread as i have a strikingly similar problem to the Original poster.

Hopefully with the info i've found out a solution can be found:

From a post i made on PC Pro forums (where there's no reply yet):

Quote:
Problem: I cannot upload pics on tinypic, photobucket, awooga.org etc on my laptop, running windows vista with service pack applied.

Other symptoms: I cannot test my upload speed on FLASH based speed tests, e.g. this one

What i have ruled out: 1. It's not the firewall, doesn't work with it off.

2. It's not the router, my desktop pc can upload pics/run tests fine

3. It's not the wireless mode on router or laptop, problem still occurs when i use CAT5 cable to connect to the Internet.

4. uploads are NOT disabled on my laptop, tested by running utorrent + i would not be able to post if i could not send data.

So, it would seem that there is something blocking me from uploading data via flash, i have of course uninstalled and reinstalled Flash and still no joy.
now i've followed the advice from the previous page (where i had not already done so) and interestingly i have no issues when running the tweak test (i assume this is because it is in Java and for me only flash seems to be affected)

now i know this makes my problem slightly different to yours Serenatous, however you also said that you had an upload speed of sorts but could not upload pics/files of any size, which is where i feel we have something in common.

The fact that you can post means you have some upload speed, not being able to upload images/files at all is very odd, and frustrating as i am finding out.

Re: I need help, with the internet!

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Note: You will need to post complete details of your configuration and your specific issue in this new thread for us to help you.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Re: I need help, with the internet!

thanks and sorry to be a pain.

I actually went and reinstalled vista and everything was working ok, UNTIL i reinstalled AGV (full version 8)

Now AGV required i install an Update for Windows Vista (KB929547) so either this update or a badly configured AGV must be at fault no?

As i'd already got this narrowed down to flash based websites i wonder if there are any settings i can manually enter into AGV to solve this or at least isolate the problem as the update.

thanks again.

Re: I need help, with the internet!

quick update to say that i've unistelled the vista update (KB929547) and now all working fine.

quite ironic given that the update is designed to speed up internet access

Re: I need help, with the internet!

Ha, another update!

internet is not running fine! - it's doing all the things AVG say it will do without the patch installed:

On some computers with Windows Vista, opening of websites or accessing network resources can be greatly slowed down when AVG WebShield is active. This behavior is in fact caused by a problem in one of the Windows network drivers, and can be fixed by installing the Windows update KB929547:
so here i am stuck between a rock and a hard place, i can't browse the web comfortably without the patch and i can't use certain websites at all with the patch!

I also see there are quite a few posts cropping up on here about strange internet errors, have microsoft dropped a clanger? is there anything you guys can suggest as a workaround?

to strike one possible option off the list, i'm loathe to uninstall AVG as i've paid for it now and they've stopped updating version 7.5.

Re: I need help, with the internet!

webbm2, have you tried disabling Web shield, email scanner, And link scanner, and after that your internet should be back to normal, i know cuz of the avg's default configuration will stop you from having your full speed and upload...
But my problem seems that it might be a network configuration...

Sorry to cut in but im trying to help,,,

cuz i had your problem but i fixed it :)

Re: I need help, with the internet!

Perhaps switching to the free Avast anti virus program might end all your problems:

Compatible with Vista

Re: I need help, with the internet!

I have found a lot of users of the free AVG 7.5 have gone on to pay for the updated version of AVG 8 ...... There is a free AVG 8, you do not have to pay.
Just in case some users are not aware of this:

Re: I need help, with the internet!

Sorry, apologies RE; the paid for version of AVG.

Back to your problem..

having Vista have you checked through its "problem reports and solutions" found in the control panel, when open look in its "history" from the list to the left.

If there are any references to Flash etc you can run the "check again for solutions".

Do you have SP1 for Vista installed?

This is best installed when it comes in via "Windows Updates" as your pc is checked beforehand for any incompatible drivers. You can manually check windows updates from the start menu/all programs, check the "available updates" if any important updates are listed they have to be installed before SP1 will be offered to you.
If there are any drivers offered and SP1 is not yet offered, this means those drivers are needed and you should install them ......... SP1 is likely then to follow (just rescan with "check for updates")

Vista also has the "performance information "utility which can reveal a lot when it comes to problematic programs or drivers on your pc, maybe check this out and see if it tells you anything:

Control panel/performance information/Advanced Tools from left hand list , hopefully you might get an indication to something that is not playing ball with AVG 8.
It could even be a service that AVG has effected???

Good luck with this
